New flagship Geely E5 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features
Chinese auto giant Geely has launched a new flagship variant of its E5 electric SUV, namely the E5 Apex Plus.
Positioned above the current flagship – the Apex – the Apex Plus arrives with a price tag roughly R30,000 more than the former, demanding buyers part with R788,888.
This higher price comes with a larger battery and, as a result, greater range, despite sharing the same powertrain and features as the existing Apex model.
Geely Auto South Africa said it is proud to expand its local electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, calling the new model a “sophisticated and intelligently engineered electric SUV”.
“As the automotive industry rapidly evolves towards electrification, consumers are increasingly looking for vehicles that offer not only performance and technology, but also long-term savings and everyday practicality, and the E5 Apex Plus has been designed with exactly this in mind,” it added.
Power and performance
Equipped with the same front-mounted electric motor as the Apex, which produces 160kW and 320Nm, the Apex Plus can achieve a top speed of 175km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration of 7.6 seconds.
This is slightly slower than the former model, which can do so in 7.0 seconds, though this can be attributed to the extra weight of the larger battery.
Speaking of which, the E5 Apex Plus is equipped with a 68.39kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, compared to the 60.22kWh battery found in the standard Apex.
The new SUV offers drivers an estimated WLTP driving range of 450km, thanks to its 16.2kWh/100km average energy consumption.
Once the battery is drained, the Apex Plus can be recharged using AC charging up to 11kW, which needs up to 7 hours to complete, or DC fast charging up to 100kW, which allows a recharge from 30%–80% in 20 minutes.
Features
In terms of styling, the Apex Plus is identical to the existing E5 line-up in terms of size, featuring the same bold fascia as the Apex, with integrated LED lighting and a futuristic appearance.
The SUV’s 4,615mm long and 1,901mm wide body houses a 2,750mm wheelbase, which enables a spacious interior layout and a 461-litre luggage capacity.
As can be expected from all premium Chinese SUVs, the new E5 features a comprehensive tech suite with a range of connectivity and convenience features.
This includes a 15.4-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.2-inch digital driver display, wireless charging, USB Type-A and Type-C ports, keyless entry and push-button start, voice control functionality, and over-the-air software updates.
The cabin also features leather-appointed seating, including power-adjustable front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.
As a family-focused SUV, the E5 Apex Plus features a wide array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
These include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, driver monitoring system, electronic stability control, hill descent control, and multiple airbags.
