New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has finally gone on sale in South Africa.

The FJ is a highly anticipated new Adventure SUV that follows in the footsteps of the fan-favourite Prado.

Toyota debuted the FJ alongside two other cars at its inaugural Matsuri Festival at Kyalami this past weekend – the other two being the new RAV4 and the bZ4X.

It is now available in two specifications, and prices start at R714,000, making it significantly more affordable than the R1.3 million Prado.

Performance

The latest addition to Toyota’s Land Cruiser stable is equipped with a 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 122kW and 245Nm.

This is paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

It also has a low-range transfer case and a rear differential lock.

Fuel consumption clocks in at an average of 10.7l/100km which, combined with a 63-litre fuel tank, gives the FJ a range of 589km.

Built on a ladder-frame chassis, the FJ is 4,610mm long with a 2,580mm wheelbase.

For reference, this is how the FJ compares to the Prado:

DimensionToyota Land Cruiser FJToyota Prado
Length4,610mm4,925mm
Width1,855mm1,980mm
Height1,890mm1,935mm
Wheelbase2,580mm2,850mm
Ground clearance245mm216mm
Approach angle29.0 degrees30.0 degrees
Departure angle38.0 degrees17.0 degrees

The FJ is smaller than the Prado, though the difference is smaller than you may expect, given the vehicle’s boxy, compact appearance.

The advantage is that it has better ground clearance and a shorter wheelbase, which makes it better-suited for traversing rocky terrain.

Features

The Land Cruiser FJ has two trim levels to choose from – the GX and VX.

The vehicle itself has a blocky, retro aesthetic with roof rails, side steps, a black lower front bumper, and large black wheel arches housing a set of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels.

It also has LED headlights, C-shaped LED daytime running lights, fog lamps, LED taillights, and a full-size spare wheel mounted on the back door.

Features on the GX include keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel, fabric seats, stainless steel scuff plates, automatic dual-zone climate control, six speakers, two USB Type-C ports, a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It also has front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and hill-descent control.

Those who opt for the VX can also expect a leather steering wheel, faux leather upholstery, traction control, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, and lane-departure warning.

The South African pricing for the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is as follows:
