New Chinese bakkie goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features
LDV has officially launched the new Terron 9 in South Africa.
Back in January, the Chinese carmaker announced that the first shipment of its new bakkie had arrived and that it would soon be available in showrooms.
Now, LDV has announced that the Terron 9 is on sale in two specifications at a starting price of R779,900.
This makes it the flagship of the LDV stable, slotting in above the midsize T60 bakkie.
Performance
Under the hood is a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine generating a substantial 164kW and 520Nm, making the Terron 9 one of the most powerful pickups in South Africa.
For reference, these are the performance stats for some of South Africa’s other high-end double-cabs:
- GWM P500 2.4T Luxury 4×4 – 135kW/480Nm
- Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 4×4 GR-Sport – 165kW/550Nm
- Ford Ranger 3.0TD V6 Wildtrak 4WD – 184kW/600Nm
Both versions of the LDV – the Premium and Flagship – feature a four-wheel-drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a low-range transfer case.
It also has a front and rear diff lock, three driving modes for Normal, Eco, and Sport, and terrain settings for Mud, Snow, Sand, Tow, Rock, Deep Snow, Deep Mud, and Rock Crawl.
Fuel consumption works out an average of 7.9l/100km, giving it a range of 1,013km on an 80-litre tank.
In terms of size, the Terron 9 is 5,500mm long, 2,265mm wide, and 1,874mm tall.
The wheelbase is 3,300mm long, and it has 220mm of ground clearance and a water-wading depth of 550mm.
It also has an approach angle of 29 degrees, a break-over angle of 20 degrees, and a departure angle of 25 degrees.
The towing capacity clocks in at 3,500kg, and the rear bed can take 850kg.
On that note, a selling point of the Terron 9 is that it has an openable rear panel, granting direct access between the cabin and the load bin.
Features

Standard kit on the LDV includes automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, alloy wheels, an electric tailgate, black and chrome accents, rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, side steps, electric side mirrors, a front tow point, a rear tow bar, and cargo slide rails and tie-down hooks.
It also comes with keyless entry and start, a heated leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, heated front seats, automatic climate control with rear vents, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a wireless charging pad, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, an eight-speaker stereo, onboard navigation, and a dual 12.3-inch screen for the driver and infotainment displays.
Safety and assistance functions, meanwhile, include daptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, hill descent control, lane-keep assist, traction control, tyre pressure monitoring, and seven airbags.
