New Chinese crossover coming to South Africa very soon

Having already launched two new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in South Africa – the Hunter K50 REEV bakkie and the Deepal S07 SUV – Chinese automaker Changan is now preparing to introduce the S05.

The S05 is a C-segment crossover, and is expected to have two drivetrain options at launch – a REEV (Range-Extended Electric Vehicle) configuration, as well as a battery-electric (BEV) option.

Marinus Venter, General Manager of Changan South Africa, explains that South African motorists are ready for a smarter, more practical approach to electrified mobility.

“Our next-generation EV lineup has been developed to balance innovation with real-world usability, giving customers the confidence, technology and versatility they need for everyday driving conditions,” he noted.

“Whether it’s the capability of the Hunter K50 REEV or the premium intelligence of the Deepal range, our focus remains on making advanced mobility more accessible and more relevant for the local market.”

With these models, Changan aims to position itself as a forward-thinking brand that looks beyond the “novelty of electrification”.

“In a country that needs innovation to be accessible, beautiful and useful all at once, Changan’s next-generation EV approach feels less like a gamble and more like perfect timing,” it said.

Prices for the S05 REEV are not yet known and will be confirmed at launch, while the Hunter REEV retails for R799,900, and the S07 retails for R995,900.

What to expect

The incoming S05 REEV has been designed with the Deepal design philosophy in mind, coupling intelligent technology with a more compact, agile and city-friendly package, compared to the S07.

As a REEV, the range-extended crossover combines electric intelligence with the reassurance of extended-range capability.

It features a 27.28kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, which enables a pure-electric range of at least 160km, and fast charging capable of refilling the battery from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The Deepal S05’s power originates in its rear-mounted electric motor producing 160kW and 320Nm, which is supported by a 1.5-litre range extender, giving the REEV a 1,000km combined range.

Those who opt for an electric powertrain can expect the Deepal S05 BEV to produce significantly more power – 192kW – thanks to its larger e-motor.

Naturally, the BEV is also fitted with a much larger 56.1kWh battery, which enables a total electric range of 510km between recharges.

Inside, the crossover is fitted with a 15.4-inch 2.5K central infotainment control screen, an AR heads-up display, a 14-speaker audio system, 540-degree panoramic imaging, frameless doors and intelligent ADAS features.
