New BMW M2 coming to South Africa – What to expect

BMW has pulled the wraps off the new M2 Coupé destined for the South African market later this year.

The compact high-performance German sports car will feature the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system for the first time, enhancing traction and enabling faster acceleration.

According to BMW, its innovative M Ignite engine technology also significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads or at high speeds.

Another first for the soon-to-be-launched model is its Individual Borusan Turkish Blue finish, a special paint job which will be available on M2 models for the first time.

“The new BMW M2 with M xDrive opens the next chapter in the story of an icon,” said Alexander Karajlovic, Vice President for Development at BMW M

“It breaks new ground in blending the strong, uncompromising character of the BMW M2 compact high-performance sports car with the superior traction and precision of M xDrive for the first time.”

Karajlovic noted that the upgraded model sees its performance generated by a straight-six engine, and adds maximum control, stability and acceleration in any conditions.

“Like its stablemates, the BMW M2 with M xDrive is therefore very much a driver’s car, but it also elevates its high-performance abilities to a new level and redefines sporting prowess in the compact M segment,” he added.

The Munich-based automaker confirmed that the M2 Coupé will be built at San Luis Potosí in Mexico from August 2026, with the first models expected to arrive on our shores in the fourth quarter of the year.

Pricing and final specifications for the South Africa-bound models will be determined and announced closer to the market introduction date.

All-wheel-drive performance

Under the hood, the new M2 will feature BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, producing 353kW and 600Nm.

This power is distributed to either the rear wheels or all four, via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The coupé features BMW’s all-new M Ignite technology – a successful technology transfer from racing cars to production models, which will become standard across all straight-six BMW M engines.

As a result of this, the M2 with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than its sister model with pure rear-wheel drive.

It can also reach 200km/h in 12.5 seconds before reaching a limited top speed of 250km/h, which can be upped to 285km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package.

According to the German badge, its new pre-chamber combustion process significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads, leading to a combined fuel efficiency of 10.4 to 10.3l/100km in the M2.

Keeping all of this in check are the M xDrive and Active M Differential systems, which feature an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, dividing power between the front and rear wheels.

Under normal driving conditions, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, and only when they cannot feed any more power to the road, the all-wheel-drive system brings the front wheels into play.

Together, the systems adapt the car’s responses precisely to the driving situation to deliver a dynamic driving experience.

Its lightweight aluminium front and rear suspension, coupled with M Compound brakes, and 19-inch front- and 20-inch rear alloy wheels keep the high performance coupé on the road.

Safety equipment fitted as standard include side airbags for driver and passenger, as well as head airbags for front and rear seats, crash sensors, and a tyre pressure indicator, among others.
