New Toyota RAV4 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

The new Toyota RAV4 has officially gone on sale in South Africa.

The next-generation RAV4 is one of three new Toyota vehicles that recently made their debut at the inaugural Matsuri Festival at Kyalami – the others being the electric bZ4X and the Land Cruiser FJ Adventure SUV.

Toyota previously confirmed that the RAV4 would be available in five specifications; however, it provided pricing for only four of them.

It stated that the fifth derivative, the range-topping plug-in hybrid (PHEV), would only have its price tag revealed at launch.

Now, the Japanese carmaker has announced the pricing for the full roster, revealing that the PHEV starts at R1,043,900.

Engines

The RAV4 series starts off with the GX, which is exclusively sold as a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and a small electric motor, generating a combined output of 176kW.

Toyota does not publish the combined torque stats for its hybrids, so we only know that the engine produces a total of 221Nm.

The GX also features the brand’s E-Four all-wheel-drive system, which connects to a CVT and leads to an average fuel consumption of 4.5l/100km.

Next up is the VX, which can be had with either the HEV system or a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol block with 127kW and 203Nm.

This version is front-wheel-drive, but also uses a CVT, resulting in a fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km.

The penultimate model, the GR-Sport, is only available with the HEV powertrain.

Last but certainly not least, we have the new PHEV, which pairs the combustion engine with a more powerful e-motor and a 25.4kWh battery.

The result is a combined output of 225kW, making it the most powerful of the group.

Thanks to its battery, the PHEV can travel 142km on pure electric power. The battery has an 11kW AC onboard charger, though it also supports public DC fast chargers.

Features

The new RAV4 features a honeycomb-style hexagonal grille, similar to what we’ve seen on the facelifted Corolla Cross or the next-gen Hilux.

The grille is body-coloured on most variants with the exception of the GR-Sport, which has a blacked-out aesthetic to convey its racing theme.

There are five base colours to choose from on the GX and VX: Platinum White Pearl, Attitude Black, Moon Grey, Smokey Blue and Midnight Green.

The GR-Sport and PHEV are sold exclusively with a bi-tone black roof, which can be paired with the following: Platinum White Pearl, Smokey Blue, Passion Red, Moonlight Ocean, Avant-Garde Bronze, and Moon Grey.

Other styling cues include slim LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED taillights, and alloy wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches in size, depending on the trim level.

Standard kit on the GX includes a full-size spare alloy wheel, electric side mirrors, keyless start and entry, fabric seats, a multifunction steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat, six speakers, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.5-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Additionally, the RAV4 comes standard with cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, traction control, stability control, and seven airbags.

The VX throws in adaptive headlights, rain-sensing wipers, an electric tailgate, a moonroof, leather upholstery, a leather steering wheel, electric front seats with heating, ventilation, and memory settings, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, a wireless charger, a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen, and a heads-up display.

It also has blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera.

As you’d expect, the GR-Sport has bespoke Gazoo Racing-themed extras like red brake callipers, paddle shifters, GR badges, and GR-branded seats.
