New Mercedes-Benz CLA coupé arrives in South Africa – Pricing and features

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz has introduced the all-new CLA 200 to the South African market.

The Stuttgart-based manufacturer declared that the latest model raises the standards of the local compact luxury segment and sets the tone for the rest of the badge’s new line-up.

“The CLA 200 serves as the brilliant gateway into a completely new, ground-up family of vehicles, built on a highly flexible modular architecture,” it said.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the coupé with two derivatives – the Progressive and the AMG Line – with the former priced from R941,701.

Performance

Both models feature the same powertrain layout, which the carmaker updated for the new generation CLA range.

The Hybrid-Technology petrol engine features a 48-volt system that blends a 1.5-litre motor with an integrated electric motor found inside the new eight-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission.

This layout enables combined outputs of 135kW and 330Nm, which are sent exclusively to the front wheels. As a result, the coupé sprints from 0-100km/h in 8.0 seconds and can reach 232km/h.

The new CLA line-up also maintains a respectable combined fuel consumption of 5.4l/100km, thanks to the updated powertrain setup.

Features

Mercedes-Benz updated the CLA 200’s sporty exterior with GT proportions, which includes a long wheelbase, short body overhangs, and a sleek, lower “greenhouse”, or cabin.

The A-shape front fascia features a chrome star-pattern grille framed by Multibeam LED headlights, which form the silhouette of the iconic Mercedes-Benz star, a feature that extends to the rear taillights.

The single-piece panoramic glass roof is standard on both models, seamlessly stretching from the windscreen to the rear window.

Inside, the new CLA models introduce minimalist, yet tech-driven, styling cues, with the free-standing MBUX Superscreen at the centre of it all.

This feature spans the length of the dashboard, integrating a 10.25-inch driver display with a high-resolution 14-inch central touchscreen infotainment control centre.

It also offers improved headroom over its predecessor, as well as premium materials like the technical black and clean white pearl sports upholstery.

In the cabin, a multi-tier floating centre console features integrated cup holders and a wireless smartphone charging cradle.

The new CLA range is also the first to rely entirely on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), backed by a high-performance supercomputer and the Unity Game Engine.

This allows for a hyper-personalised digital environment that uses over-the-air (OTA) updates to keep the coupé up to date.

This update introduces the fourth generation of MBUX, which integrates several AI assistants from both Microsoft and Google.
