Special edition Toyota Corolla coming to South Africa – Pricing revealed

Toyota is marking 60 years of the iconic Toyota Corolla with a special 60th Anniversary edition of its most popular hatchback, and thanks to vehicle specialists Duoporta, we know what it will cost.

The limited-edition model was quietly added to the Toyota South Africa website, with not too many details shared ahead of its local arrival.

That said, the carmaker announced it would celebrate the world’s best-selling car by launching special edition versions of its European-built Hatchback, Touring Sports and Sedan models.

These feature exclusive styling, enhanced specifications and commemorative details, while keeping the existing powertrain options.

“Corolla’s sustained success is founded on the principles Toyota applied in creating the original model back in 1966. The vision then was for a high-quality, versatile car at an affordable price, offering added value,” said the Japanese giant.

“Today, 12 generations later, it remains true to those qualities, having constantly adapted over the years to meet people’s changing needs and priorities to maintain its place at the heart of the market.”

To date, more than 57 million Toyota Corolla models have been sold worldwide, and today the model is manufactured at 12 global locations and sold in 150 countries and regions.

Orders for the 60th Anniversary edition Corolla Hatch are already open, with orders expected to be fulfilled from the end of October. The special model has a price tag of R618,900.

What we know so far

According to Toyota’s European branch, this version of the Corolla is distinguished from other models by its exclusive New Boreal Blue metallic paint and Night Sky Black roof and pillars, creating a two-tone exterior.

The 60th Anniversary model also features new-look 18-inch alloy wheels with a contrast matt-and-machined finish and chromed black wheel nuts.

The finishing touch on the special-edition Corolla models’ exterior is stylish matt silver 60th Anniversary decals and badging.

Buyers will also have additional paintwork colour options for the 60th Anniversary models, including Platinum White Pearl premium finish and Ash Grey metallic.

Inside, Toyota has fitted matt silver scuff plates bearing the 60th Anniversary logo and front and rear carpet mats in black textile with matt silver inserts.

These models also include the latest Corolla range’s specifications, including a customisable 12.3-inch driver’s combimeter and the Toyota Smart Connect+ multimedia system with a 10.5-inch touchscreen.

As in other Corolla hatch models, drivers can expect to find a comprehensive safety and driving assistance package as standard, including Toyota Safety Sense features.

These include a Pre-Collision System with Intersection Collision Avoidance, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and Lane Trace Assist, Emergency Steering Assist and Road Sign Assist.

A familiar powertrain

Thanks to Duoporta, we know that the 60th Anniversary hatch will arrive in South Africa sporting the highly efficient fifth-generation Toyota hybrid powertrain.

This configuration comprises a 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain producing a combined 103kW and over 140Nm, which it sends to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.

The result is a top speed of 180km/h and an average fuel consumption of only 4.0l/100km, giving its 43-litre fuel tank a range of 1,075km.

Prices for the Toyota Corolla range in South Africa, which now includes the 60th Anniversary edition, are as follows:

These prices include a standard 3-year/100,000km warranty, a 8-year/195,000km hybrid battery warranty, and a 6-services/90,000km service plan.
