Subaru has officially announced that the all-new Outback is coming to South Africa in the near future.
The Japanese carmaker confirmed that the new SUV, which features a fresh design, revised interior, and a new Wilderness derivative, will arrive on our shores in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Nteo Nkoli, National Marketing Manager at Subaru Southern Africa, said the new Outback will appeal to longstanding Subaru owners while giving other buyers a reason to get to know the brand.
“People choose an Outback because they ask a lot of one car. They want to travel comfortably, have space for their family and feel confident when the road or weather takes a turn,” said Nkoli.
“Those qualities still matter enormously to us. With the new model, we have the opportunity to offer them in a very different-looking package, and the Wilderness is something we’re particularly looking forward to sharing with South African customers.”
What to expect
South Africans will have a choice of two models once the new Outback arrives in South Africa – the Premium and Wilderness.
The Premium is fitted with a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that delivers 137kW and 254Nm, while the Wilderness has a 2.4-litre turbocharged block with a higher output of 194kW and 382Nm.
In both cases, gear changes are handled by Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT. Additionally, the brand’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system will be standard on both trims.
The top-spec Wilderness also features a dual-function X-Mode for extra assistance when tackling difficult terrain, making it the ideal choice for buyers interested in off-roading.
Visually, the new Subaru has a taller profile and a blocky new front grille, similar to the style seen on many other recent 4x4s. The Wilderness also comes with protective cladding.
Inside, the cabin is kitted out with a new 12.1-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital driver display.
The car also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for music, navigation, and communication functions.
A few of the driving aids confirmed for our market so far include adaptive cruise control and pre-collision braking assist.
Each model will be sold with a 5-year/105,000km maintenance plan and a 5-year/150,000km warranty. Buyers also have the option to extend the maintenance plan to 7-years/150,000km.
Other details about the new Outback, such as its pricing and full spec sheet, will be announced closer to its release in Q4 2026.
