New Hyundai Exter launched in South Africa – Pricing and features
Hyundai has launched a new commercial variant for the popular Exter crossover in South Africa, meant to appeal to small businesses, entrepreneurs, and fleet operators in need of affordable transport solutions.
Dubbed the Exter Cargo Van, the new model is a panel van conversion of the Exter compact SUV that replaces the back seats with a sizeable cargo zone.
This is the second modified commercial vehicle the brand has introduced in South Africa, as it already offers a Cargo version of the Grand i10 hatchback, which the Exter shares a platform with.
The Exter’s main advantage over the Grand i10 is its increased ground clearance, making it better suited for operators who need to traverse gravel roads or rural areas with challenging driving conditions.
The new model is priced at R284,500 including VAT. However, since it is homologated as a light commercial vehicle, qualifying businesses can reclaim the VAT, effectively reducing the price to R247,392.
A crossover to suit small businesses
Since it shares a platform with the Grand i10, buyers who grab the Exter can expect the same 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 61kW and 114Nm.
It features a five-speed manual gearbox, which sends power to the front wheels. Fuel consumption works out to 5.7l/100km, giving it a range of 649km on its 37-litre tank.
The panel van conversion has turned the compact SUV from a four-door passenger car to a two-door transporter with an enclosed cargo area.
Just like the Grand i10 Cargo, the new Exter has a mesh divider behind the front seats. It also has protective mesh inserts behind the backside windows to deter smash-and-grabs.
The rear seats have been removed entirely to create a flat loading area with a capacity of roughly 1,200 litres. It can carry up to 450kg of goods.
Equipment on the Exter includes air conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth, an infotainment screen, remote central locking, six airbags, ABS, and tyre pressure monitoring.
All Hyundai vehicles are sold with a 5-year/150,000km warranty, and a 7-year/200,000km drivetrain warranty.
