The pricing for the next-generation BMW X5 has been uncovered ahead of its launch in South Africa early next year.
Our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists alerted us that the new X5 has been added to BMW South Africa’s website configurator and is currently listed in two diesel-powered specifications.
The new SUV was confirmed for our market back in July, when BMW said that it would arrive in South Africa in “early 2027,” presumably meaning the first quarter of next year.
It also confirmed that it will feature three different powertrains at launch, including a diesel unit (X5 40d), a petrol plug-in hybrid (X5 50e PHEV), and a fully-electric unit (iX5 60).
The pricing for the electrified units is still unknown; however, we can see on BMW’s website that the 40d will be sold in either a base or M Sport specification, and that prices will start at R1,948,935.
Engine
The new 40d units are equipped with a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which generates a total of 230kW and 670Nm.
Both models feature the brand’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which connects to the drivetrain via an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
This lets the SUV, which is nearly five metres long and weighs three tonnes, accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 6.1 seconds. It also has an electronically capped top speed of 230km/h.
Fuel consumption is also on the lighter side at 6.7l/100km, giving the X5 a range of 1,119km on a 75-litre tank.
Features
The new X5 uses the same design language seen on BMW’s Neue Klasse electric models, with the latest version of the “Iconic Glow” kidney grille and “Double X” LED headlights.
It also has 22-inch alloy wheels and “BMW Winglet” door handles that are recessed and require only a light touch to open.
Looking inside, the high-end SUV has Merino leather upholstery, an Alcantara headliner, and the brand’s new Panoramic iDrive display with a 3D Head-Up display.
It has the same multifunction steering wheel as the Neue Klasse, and buyers can install a front passenger display as an option extra.
The manufacturer also confirmed that the X5 will come with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System, including parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, lane-keep assist, traffic jam assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot detection.

- BMW X5 40d xDrive M Sport – R2,008,935
All BMW models sold in South Africa carry a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
The pricing for the plug-in hybrid and electric units will be revealed closer to the SUV’s release window in early 2027.
