Ford launches a Kombi in South Africa – Pricing and features

Ford South Africa has replaced the outgoing long-wheelbase Tourneo Custom Trend with a new entry-level offering under a name associated with this segment – the Tourneo Custom Kombi.

The Kombi shares a platform with the VW Transporter Kombi, as these models are built under the joint venture between the American and German automotive giants.

Upon arrival, the new Ford van will join its Tourneo siblings as the only offering priced under R1 million, with an asking price of R996,000 – R121,500 cheaper than its predecessor.

According to the manufacturer, its introduction marks the arrival of a new-generation passenger vehicle that brings together space and practicality, with enhanced technology and modern design.

“The new Tourneo Custom Kombi builds on the practical strengths of the outgoing Trend, adding the technology, comfort and refinement of our latest-generation Tourneo Custom”, said Ryan Searle, Director of Sales Operations, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

“With its efficient diesel powertrain, eight-speed automatic transmission, fixed rear seating and practical, technology-rich cabin, it is a versatile solution for customers who regularly transport people.”

Powertrain

The incoming model is powered by the same 2.0-litre SiT diesel engine as the outgoing model.

This motor produces 100kW and 360Nm, and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It remains to be seen if the new model retains the Tourneo Trend’s average fuel consumption of 7.4l/100km.

Features

In terms of styling and design, not much has been changed from the outgoing model, with Ford’s Kombi fitted with Daytime Running Lights for a distinctive appearance and improved visibility.

Additionally, buyers can choose to have the new model fitted with optional 16-inch alloy wheels instead of the standard steel wheels.

Inside, the expansive cabin features eight cloth seats in a dedicated passenger-carrying configuration.

The vehicle also features plenty of storage compartments and space for luggage and belongings, while the driver and passenger benefit from individual armrests.

Ford’s Kombi is also equipped with a 13-inch central infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an 8-inch digital driver instrument display.

Across the Ford van range – including Transit and Tourneo models – a Driver Monitoring System uses an infrared camera to track the driver’s head and eye movements for signs of distraction.

Once the system detects potential distraction, it displays an instrument-panel warning to help the driver keep their eyes on the road.

Prices for the updated Ford Tourneo Custom range are as follows:

These prices include 6-year/90,000km Ford Optional Service Plan, 4-year/120,000km Ford warranty, 4-year/unlimited distance Roadside Assistance and a 5-year/unlimited distance corrosion warranty.
