First look at Jaguar’s big comeback – Photos

Nearly two years after Jaguar’s controversial rebranding campaign, which gave us the first look at the Type 00 Concept, the brand has unveiled the real thing – the Type 01.

The luxury four-door GT is a British-designed, engineered and crafted electric vehicle (EV) that follows the brand’s new creative philosophy, with a long bonnet and sleek silhouette. Jaguar said it looks and drives like no other electric car.

“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a car for a new era,” said Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover.

“Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant – that’s their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning.”

He said the Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in the brand’s quest to reinvent Jaguar for the 21st century.

The futuristic EV has been teased several times, but has finally been unveiled in its entirety, alongside its retail price of £130,000, or over R2.8 million, before taxes, duties, and delivery fees.

Tri-motor electric power

To achieve its vision of an EV exceeding 735kW, Jaguar fitted the Type 01 with electric motors in a tri-motor setup with Intelligent Torque Vectoring.

The result is up to 757kW and 1,365Nm of torque, allowing the GT car to accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in only 3.2 seconds.

According to the manufacturer, the vehicle does far more than sprint to 100km/h, accelerating from 100km/h to 180km/h in 4.0 seconds thanks to know-how from the Jaguar TCS Racing Formula E team.

The Type 01 features an expansive 118kWh battery and an 850-volt architecture, “allowing drivers to complete up to 99.7% of their journey uninterrupted,” according to the automaker, with an EPA range of up to 644km.

This figure is far more impressive when considering the more widely accepted WLTP range of 720km. The battery can also add 321km of range in only 13 minutes using 350kW rapid DC charging.

Features

The Type 01’s electric-only architecture enabled its styling and proportions, shrinking around the driver with 50:50 weight distribution.

It is also Jaguar’s most powerful and advanced model to date, with more than 360 patent applications submitted during its development.

Exterior colours include gloss or satin finishes, while the exterior Fender Ingot features the famous crafted Jaguar “leaper”.

The interior features a central spine that runs the length of the cabin, mirrored on each side by brass-inspired elements.

It also features an interactive 24-inch single-glass OLED driver display directly ahead of the driver alongside an additional smartphone-style seven-inch display between the driver and front passenger.

Jaguar positioned common key controls within comfortable reach, while the EV’s immersive audio creates a wall of sound using a full-width, full-range, automotive-first Panoramic Soundbar and Sensory Audio seats.
