Omoda unveils new off-road SUV – Photos

Chinese carmaker Omoda has unveiled its first off-road-themed SUV in the form of the brand-new Omoda X.

The Chery Group brand debuted the new car at the Omoda & Jaecoo International User Summit in Wuhu, China this week.

It follows the same “Cyber Mecha” design established by the brand’s other upcoming car, the C4 crossover, which is set to appear in South Africa in 2027.

The new SUV comes as a surprise, as Omoda is best-known for making sleek urban models, while its sister brand Jaecoo is ostensibly the more outdoor-oriented of the two nameplates.

The C5, for example, is marketed as a stylish city car, while the J5 and J7 have been described as budget Range Rovers due to their looks, performance, and price tags.

In contrast, the new X has a much higher stance and ground clearance than anything else we’ve seen from Omoda, complete with large wheel arches, chunky tyres, and prominent suspension coil springs.

“The X represents the next evolution of OMODA’s CROSSVOLUTION philosophy, combining the everyday usability of a crossover with more expressive styling and a stronger focus on individuality,” said the company.

“It pushes beyond the conventional urban crossover formula while retaining the versatility expected of the segment.”

Visually, it closely resembles the smaller C4, with slim LED headlights and “lightning bolt” LED taillights.

Unfortunately, the company has yet to share images of the interior, and other details about the car, such as its powertrain, specifications, and availability, will only be announced at a later stage.

That being said, the fact that the model shown to the media has no grille suggests the X will feature either a hybrid or electric powertrain.

Bear in mind that the C4 will be sold with internal combustion engine, hybrid, and electric derivatives, so it’s fair to assume the X will have similar options.

Omoda & Jaecoo said that the X is one of several new international product offerings in the pipeline, as the company aims to expand its portfolio to 13 models over the next three years.

It added that these models will help the brand expand into new segments and cater to a wider range of customers.

In South Africa, the O&J catalogue currently features the Omoda C5 and C7, and the Jaecoo J5 and J7.

The C4 and J8 are set to launch in South Africa in the near future, bringing the portfolio up to six cars.

There’s also the Omoda C9, but since it’s a rebadged version of the Exeed RX, it’s unclear whether it technically counts towards O&J’s goal of 13 cars.

Either way, it’s clear that the Chinese carmaker has a lot more in store for international audiences, starting with the new Omoda X.
