New Toyota Hilux Mild Hybrid – Official South African pricing and line-up

The new Toyota Hilux Mild Hybrid is launching in South Africa in the coming weeks at a starting price of R774,800, our sources at Duoporta vehicle information specialists confirmed.

Available in six flavours across Raider and Legend trim levels, the MHEV variants intend to provide improved acceleration, better fuel economy, and heightened levels of comfort over the standard diesel models.

The launch of the new Hilux will be accompanied by the introduction of the Fortuner MHEV as well as that of the sportier Hilux GR-Sport III.

Hilux MHEV specs

The new Hilux MHEVs are fitted with Toyota’s 2.8-litre, GD-6, turbo-diesel powerplant combined with a 48V battery, electric motor generator, and DC converter.

Power output for this setup remains unchanged at 150kW and 500Nm, as well as fuel consumption which sits at 7.4l/100km for the 4×2 and 8.0l/100km for the 4×4 models. A six-speed automatic transmission delivers drive to the wheels across the entire range.

Maximum payload and towing capacity for the 4×2 versions are pegged at 850kg and 2,750kg, respectively, and for the 4x4s, these parameters come in at 790kg and 3,500kg.

While their headlining figures are the same as the non-MHEV derivatives, Toyota said the semi-electric Hilux bakkies do have a few distinct advantages.

These include an additional 12kW and 65Nm of boost when pulling away from a standstill to allow for quicker and smoother acceleration, and a drop in average fuel consumption of about 5% through an “advanced” Start/Stop system and a reduction in idling speed to 600rpm.

They also have lower noise, vibration, and harshness levels and feature braking regeneration abilities which should reduce disc and pad wear.

Standard fittings on the Raider-badged models encompass automatic LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, fabric seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control, a six-speaker sound system, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, hill-assist control, downhill assist, ABS with brake assist, and seven airbags.

Over and above this, the Legend trims are delivered with distinctive 18-inch rims, Legend Black exterior finishes, side steps, leather seats, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure alert.

The top-spec Legend RS takes it one step further with an automatic roller shutter over the load bed, a rear styling bar, loadbox rubberising, tailgate assist, and a dust defence kit that seals the gaps of the tailgate edge to keep the load area clean.
