Chery has expanded its Tiggo 7 Pro Max series in South Africa with a new entry-level model called the Premium, which is available in both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations.
The Premium has a starting price of R499,900, making it R30,000 cheaper than the previous base trim, the Distinction, which goes for R529,900.
The new model is intended to capitalize on the success of the Max series that launched in October last year, which has helped the Tiggo 7 to become the third most popular mid-size SUV in the country with 1,060 sales in the first quarter of 2024, according to the company.
Features
Since the Premium is the new entry-level specification, it offers less equipment than the Distinction.
That being said, it still comes with a number of nice-to-haves, including a 24.6-inch curved dual display for the driver and infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, onboard navigation, an eight-speaker Sony stereo, a leather multifunction steering wheel, voice commands, leather seats, automatic climate control with rear vents, keyless entry and start, 18-inch alloy wheels, a full-sized spare wheel, and automatic LED headlights.
It also features safety and assistance equipment such as ABS, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring, front and side airbags, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, and cruise control.
To put this in context, this is what the Distinction includes that is not included on the Premium: side curtain airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, front inner-seat airbags, front parking sensors, a six-way electronic driver’s seat, heated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient lighting.
Engine
The new Chery is powered by the same 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the rest of the Max units, which produces 145kW and 290Nm.
The FWD models have an average fuel consumption of 7.0l/100km while the AWD units consume 7.8l/100km, and both connect to the drivetrain via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.
Every Tiggo 7 Pro Max also has access to six different driving modes, namely Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, Muddy, and Off-Road.
