Most popular used cars in South Africa – With pricing

The Ford Ranger is still on top as the most sought-after used vehicle in South Africa with 1,599 motorists picking one up in March 2024.

It was a difficult month for the nation’s used-car sector, as it recorded a 15.1% decline in sales compared to the same month last year, according to AutoTrader’s latest sales report.

This follows similarly bleak news from the new-car industry, which experienced its eighth consecutive month of reduced sales in March.

AutoTrader partially attributes the drop in purchases to the Easter weekend, in which all car registrations, old and new, saw less traffic.

Sales were also down 5% month-on-month compared to February with 27,274 units moved – a drop of 1,384 units.

In any case, the used sector was able to generate R11.26 billion in revenue, thanks in large part to several popular models.

Along with the Ford Ranger, the Toyota Hilux is right at the top with 1,315 units sold, followed by the VW Polo which was the last model to clear the 1,000-unit mark at 1,190 units.

The VW Polo Vivo and Toyota Fortuner cracked the top five, and the rest of the top 10 included the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Kia Picanto, Suzuki Swift, and Nissan NP200.

The NP200 is a particularly interesting entry as it ceased production in March while simultaneously reporting one of its best months on record with thousands of new customers putting down their names on one.

Given the compact bakkie’s popularity, it’s likely that the Nissan will remain a consistent top pick in the pre-owned space for some time.
