VW Polo Sedan gets new engine and model in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

VW has introduced a new engine and model to the Polo Sedan series in South Africa, expanding the range from three to five models.

Buyers can now select a more powerful turbo-petrol powertrain, as well as a new range-topping “Style” trim.

The new drivetrain costs a minimum of R421,100, or up to R454,900 in flagship Style guise.

Engine

Up till now, the Polo Sedan has only been available with a 1.6-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol motor which produces 81kW and 152Nm.

However, motorists can now finally obtain a 1.0-litre turbocharged unit like the one found in the Polo Hatch which generates 85kW and 178Nm – slightly lower than the hatchback’s 200Nm.

The new powerplant connects to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox, and provides an average fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km.

Features

The new engine option is only sold in the higher-spec Life and Style specifications, hence, owners can expect a fleshed-out equipment list starting with automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, a chrome grille, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a 15-inch space-saver spare wheel.

You also get a leather multifunction steering wheel, two-tone fabric upholstery, keyless entry and start, a wireless charger, automatic air conditioning, a 10-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight speakers, and USB ports.

It also comes with safety and assistance items in the form of six airbags, ABS, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill assist, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, cruise control, and electronic stability control.

The Style then adds to this with larger 17-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers, leatherette upholstery, a sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.

The Polo Sedan also features a boot that can accommodate up to 521 litres of luggage.
