Chery has expanded its Tiggo 4 Pro range in South Africa with two new dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) models, giving customers an alternative to the existing continuously variable transmission (CVT) units.
Prices for the new DCT variants start at R382,900, reflecting a R68,000 premium over the cheapest CVT option.
New gearbox
The new gearbox was added based on customer feedback and gives buyers the choice of a six-speed, dual-clutch shifter.
“We have been in constant contact with existing Chery Tiggo 4 Pro owners and have learned that many would like to upgrade their Tiggo 4 Pro experience with a sportier transmission and a better fuel-efficient consumption option,” said the company.
Regarding the fuel consumption aspect, the carmaker’s engineers found that the DCT consumed approximately half-a-litre less per 100km during optimization testing in both China and South Africa.
However, during road testing in South Africa, the real-world savings went as high as 1.6 litres per 100km, though this is highly dependent on the individual’s driving style and environment conditions.
The DCT is only paired with the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which has an output of 108kW and 210Nm.
Customers who have already bought a CVT model needn’t feel left out either, as Chery is developing a software update that will significantly improve fuel consumption (according to initial tests), which will be made available to the public soon.
New features
The transmission is not the only new thing about the crossover, as Chery has taken the opportunity to elaborate on the Tiggo 4 Pro’s equipment list.
The two new models, which are available in LiT and Elite guise, have a reworked centre console that is intended to be more similar to the one found in the Tiggo 7 with digital climate controls, an additional storage area, and an integrated 15W wireless charging pad on the Elite trim.
The Elite variants also come with a new high-resolution infotainment screen with offline navigation and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
