Sub-R400,000 electric hatchback confirmed for South Africa – And you know where it’s coming from

Enviro Automotive, importer and distributor of several Chinese brands, has confirmed that it will unveil a range of budget-friendly electric cars for South Africa in the last quarter of 2024 that will be priced below R400,000.

Among these will be the Dayun Yuehu, which will be known as the “S5 Mini SUV” in our market.

The Yuehu/S5 is a compact hatchback equipped with a 31.7kWh ternary-lithium battery that achieves a maximum driving range of 330km, which can be recharged completely in as little as 60 minutes at a DC fast-charging station.

Its front-mounted electric motor pumps out 35kW and 105Nm which is enough to get it up to a top speed of 100km/h.

Furthermore, the Dayun brings amenities such as an 8-inch infotainment display, multifunction steering wheel, “advanced” driver assistance systems, LED lights, and 15-inch aluminium alloy wheels.

Standing 3,695mm long, 1,685mm wide, and 1,598mm high with a minimum ground clearance of 201mm, it is about as big as the popular Renault Kwid.

The emission-friendly Chinese hatch will be supported by a 3-year/60,000km vehicle warranty and service plan once it lands on domestic roads, as well as a 5-year/120,000km battery warranty.

More to come

Alongside the Yuehu, or S5 Mini SUV, Enviro Automotive will introduce two other battery-electric vehicles pitched at the commercial sector in South Africa before 2024 closes out.

The first is the DFSK EC75 Panel Van which will be offered in two specifications, both of which are powered by a single e-motor delivering 70kW and 230Nm wired to a 50.38kWh battery that affords a driving range of over 300km.

The van boasts a 3,200mm wheelbase and 19.3m³ of cargo space, with the top-spec derivative also featuring safety systems like lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking.

The second is the SRM T3 EV 1.6-tonne which will be the first SRM-badged vehicle to be available on local soil.

The battery-powered workhorse features a 3,100mm x 1,680mm x 370mm load box offering a load area of 5,208m³.

It is driven by a single e-motor producing 60kW and 220Nm, with a 53.58kWh power module providing over 300km of driving potential.
