South Africa-bound Opel Frontera – New details revealed

Opel has revealed new information about the upcoming Frontera, which is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the first half of 2025.

The Frontera is the replacement to the Crossland that made its global debut in 2017, and is spearheading the shift to new-energy transport with two electrified drivetrains.

What we know so far

When it was first revealed, Opel stated that the new crossover would be sold as either a mild hybrid (MHEV) or a battery-electric vehicle (BEV), but did not provide any specifics on the capabilities of these options.

However, the carmaker has since confirmed that there will be three different drivelines to choose from, covering two MHEVs and one BEV.

The hybrid units feature one of two 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engines with an output of 74kW or 100kW, paired with an “electrified” six-speed automatic gearbox, which is complemented by a 48-volt battery and 21kW electric motor.

As for the BEV models, the company is still tight-lipped about the technical aspects of the powerplant, but it has come to light that the base specification can travel for 300km on a single charge, which can be increased to 400km on the range-extender units.

The other important piece of new information is that the Opel is getting a seven-seater cabin option, which will be made available at a future date once the first models have gone on sale.

By default, the vehicle has a boot capacity of 460 litres with all the seats up, which can be expanded to an impressive 1,600 litres with the rear bench folded, so a third row with two extra seats should be easily accommodated, said the brand.

An optional roof kit with mounting rails will also be available for the Frontera, as will a tent and a ladder for outdoor excursions as the roof is certified to carry up to 240kg.

The family car is being sold in two trim levels – Frontera and Frontera GS – and both come with an extensive equipment sheet.

The list of confirmed items thus far includes 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, a multifunction steering wheel, a cooled wireless charger to prevent devices overheating, four USB ports, two 10-inch colour displays for the driver and infotainment systems, onboard navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and a reverse camera.

The cabin also features new patented Intelli-Seats that are designed to provide better support and relieve lower back pressure on long trips, and these seats are upholstered in fully-recycled materials with a contrast stitch for visual flair.

Design-wise, the crossover displays many of the hallmarks of Opel’s next-generation vehicles with slim LED daytime running lights and taillights, and a “Black Vizor” grille with the automaker’s updated Blitz logo.

It should be noted, however, that these are the international specifications for the Frontera, and may be subject to change for its local introduction.
