New Mercedes-Benz Vito goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the new Vito in South Africa, boasting several improvements to the design that make it an even more practical vehicle.

The van is now available in seven configurations, and prices start at R874,000.

What’s new

Mercedes has overhauled the user experience for the Vito by adding new convenience features.

The standout inclusion is the brand’s MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system with a 10.25-inch central display which now comes standard on all models.

This screen can be operated via touch and offers a more seamless process for connecting other devices such as a smartphone.

The dashboard also features a full-colour digital instrument cluster flanked by analogue dials, which can be customized using the multifunction steering wheel controls.

Other additions to the midsize van include redesigned air vents, a new-generation steering wheel, and leather seats.

This is on top of existing equipment such as automatic air conditioning, hill-start assist, rear cabin lighting, cruise control, and an electronic park brake.

Owners can also purchase an upgrade to the centre console that includes removable cupholders, two USB type-C ports, and an open storage area.

The automaker has given attention to the exterior, too, with a more prominent front bumper and radiator grille, and five new paint options for a total of 15 colours.

Shifting to its practical aspects, the Vito weighs between 2.8 and 3.2 tonnes depending on the specification, ensuring that it is still one of the more nifty vehicles in its segment.

It is keeping the same line-up with three variations – Panel Van, Mixto, and Tourer – which offer differing levels of seating and storage space.

The Panel Van only has two front seats and therefore offers the maximum loading capacity of 6.6 cubic metres, while the Mixto is the balanced option with five seats, and the Tourer is the best people carrier with room for eight people.

Another important attribute is the Mercedes’ height, which clocks in under two metres, making it a useful tool for use in urban environments and parking lots, said the automaker.

The powertrain selection has been simplified with the dropping of the entry-level “111” 1.6-litre engine, leaving customers with two turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel options.

The “114” models produce 100kW and 330Nm, while the “116” units have a higher output of 120kW and 380Nm.

The Panel Van uses a six-speed manual gearbox, while the Mixto and Tourer are now exclusively sold with a nine-speed automatic shifter.
