This BMW won’t be on sale for much longer – Here’s why

Fans of the BMW X4 may want to act quickly, as the crossover coupe won’t be around for much longer.

The German carmaker recently confirmed to Motor1 Italy that the X4 will not be renewed for another generation, bringing an end to the model’s decade-long time on the market.

A redundant model

The BMW X4 is the coupe-style counterpart to the incredibly popular X3 SUV, and has been in production since 2014.

However, its sales are considerably lower than that of the X3, though this isn’t too surprising as the manufacturer’s crossover coupe units are more niche than the models they are based on.

The reason for the X4’s discontinuation has to do with the brand’s current line-up and the existence of two other vehicles, the X2 and X6.

2024 BMW X2

The X2 and X6 are the coupe versions of the X1 and X5, respectively, and these options have overshadowed the X4 in terms of price and performance thanks to recent updates.

The second-generation X2 went on sale in South Africa in April this year with a major bump to its features, performance, and price tag, as it now sells for between R879,738 and R1,223,936.

Consequently, the new X2 has drastically reduced the price gap between it and the X4, which currently goes for between R1,208,731 and R2,225,017.

The X2 is also much larger than before, as the previous generation was more comparable to the 1 Series hatchback while the new version is now similar in size to the X4.

2023 BMW X6

The other side of the coin is the new X6, which launched in South Africa at the end of 2023.

There is a lot of overlap between the prices of the X4 and X6 derivatives, yet the latter is a more powerful option at every stage, making it the more compelling choice.

The result is that the X4 is in an awkward middle ground as buyers will likely opt for the cheaper X2, or skip straight to the more premium X6, rather than settle for the ageing X4.

BMW has not said when the X4 will disappear from showrooms, but considering that the next-gen X3 is penciled in for the fourth quarter of 2024, it’s likely that it won’t be around for much longer if the brand is not developing the new-generation coupe as well.

For those who are interested in grabbing an X4 before its gone, the current selection consists of three derivatives and three engines.

First up is the xDrive20d (available in standard and M Sport trim levels), which is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with 140kW and 400Nm, letting it accelerate to 100km/h in 8.0 seconds.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox is used to connect to all four wheels resulting in a fuel consumption of 5.6l/100km.

Next is the M40i, which gains a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol plant and generates a total of 285kW and 500Nm.

The result is a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds and an average consumption of 8.9l/100km.

Finally, there’s the M Competition, which features an uprated version of the 3.0-litre drivetrain with 375kW and 650Nm, giving it a blistering acceleration time of 3.8 seconds and a thirst of 10.6l/100km.
