New BMW 4 Series – South African pricing revealed

The pricing for the updated BMW 4 Series has been revealed ahead of its official launch in South Africa that will take place within the next three months.

According to Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, the revised coupe will now start from R1,016,063.

Engines

The 4 Series sources its power from one of three drivetrains.

The 420i units feature a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol block, which sends a total of 135kW and 300Nm to the back wheels.

This allows the coupe to sprint to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 235km/h, while achieving an average fuel consumption of 6.5l/100km.

There’s also a 420d model with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel plant, which put out 140kW and 400Nm.

This option has a more frugal consumption of 4.9l/100km, while the increase in power also shaves the 0-100km/h time to 7.5 seconds.

Finally, there’s the range-topping M440i, which gains a significantly more potent 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol mill with 285kW and 500Nm, which is transmitted to the tarmac via the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The M-badged models can rocket to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds before capping out at an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h, though this naturally comes at a higher fuel spend of 8.2l/100km.

Regardless of the version chosen, the 4 Series uses an eight-speed Sport Steptronic automatic transmission for its shifts.

Also important to note is that the M440i and 420d units are fitted with 48V mild-hybrid technology, which improves fuel consumption, adds regenerative braking capabilities, and contributes another 8kW during acceleration.

Other technical attributes to highlight include the BMW’s 50:50 weight distribution and lift-related dampers, which help to improve both the handling and ride comfort.

Optional extras include adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering, and M Sport brakes.

Features

The facelift has given the 4 Series a restyled kidney grille with new air intakes, vertical daytime running lights, and slim LED headlights.

Customers can also install Matrix LED headlamps at added cost, and it is now possible to add Laserlight LED taillamps – something that was previously reserved for the limited-edition M4 CSL.

There is also a Comfort package that will play a Welcome Light animation when the keyless entry system detects the fob from up to three metres away.

Furthermore, the four-seater has a new twin exhaust and an extended rear apron, which can be painted high-gloss black with the M Sport package.

All versions of the 4 Series come with 19-inch alloy wheels with different designs, which are finished in Jet Black, Midnight Grey, or a bi-tone colour scheme.

Regarding the convertible models, they use a panel bow soft-top roof which can be activated while travelling at speeds up to 50km/h, and takes 18 seconds to open or close.

Standard equipment on the BMW includes perforated Sports seats, keyless entry and start, automatic climate control, voice commands, nine-colour ambient cabin lighting, front-collision warning, cruise control, a speed limiter, lane-departure warning, parking assist, a reverse camera, front and rear parking sensors, a curved dual-display for the driver and infotainment systems, and a leather steering wheel with paddle shifters.

The 4 Series is also the first model to incorporate the automaker’s new M Performtex sustainable materials for its seats, though buyers can swap this out for Merino leather, or two-tone black-and-red Vernasca leather upholstery.

Another change is the dashboard now has a Dark Graphite matte finish, and the M Sport package adds aluminium and Anthracite touches to components like the gearstick and steering wheel.

There is also a Driving Assistant Professional Package that adds lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, automatic speed limit assist, route speed control, traffic light recognition, and a panoramic camera to the equipment sheet.

Pricing

The South African pricing for the new BMW 4 Series is as follows:

This includes a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
