BAIC launches new automatic 4x4s in South Africa – Pricing

BAIC has launched two new automatic options for the B40 Plus family in South Africa priced at R674,500 and R699,500, respectively.

Previously only available as a six-speed automatic, the new models introduce an eight-speed auto-box (8AT) to the B40 range delivering a smoother driving experience, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced performance, said the Chinese automaker.

Bundu-bashing on a budget

The new B40 Plus 8AT derivatives are only sold in petrol guise, in which they are equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre power unit capable of generating 165kW and 380Nm.

The new gearbox relays this power to all four wheels via an electronic four-wheel-drive system with a rear differential lock.

BAIC has yet to reveal the fuel consumption of the new 8AT models, however, considering they are supposed to be lighter on juice than the six-speed options, the average reading should be at or lower than the latter’s 10.1l/100km.

Built to go off-road, the SUV provides a generous ground clearance of 210mm, an approach angle of 37 degrees, a break-over angle of 23 degrees, and a departure angle of 31 degrees.

In terms of its physical footprint, it measures 4,645mm long, 1,925mm wide, and 1,871mm tall.

Buyers of the new B40 Plus City Hunter 8AT can expect amenities such as dual-zone climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, a digital driver’s display, a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, six speakers, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill-ascent and descent control, ABS with brake assist, and two front airbags.

The off-roader also boasts a removable hard-top roof, front and rear tow hooks, LED daytime running lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Springing for the flagship Champion 8AT further brings a leather steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat, and side steps.
