Volvo has officially launched a new limited-edition version of the popular XC60 in South Africa.
Known as the Black Edition, the SUV is available in three specifications and boasts unique visuals that give it a more exclusive aesthetic.
Only 23 examples have been allocated for our market, and prices start at R1,092,500.
What you get
The Black Edition’s special treatment starts with a stealthy Onyx Black metallic paint scheme that sparkles in strong daylight while maintaining a solid dark aura once the sun goes down.
This choice of paint is complemented by a bespoke grille and 21-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, both of which feature a high-gloss black finish.
A similar high-gloss black appearance is afforded to the various badges, including the brand’s signature Iron Mark logo on the front grille and the Volvo lettering on the tailgate.
Inside, the XC60 benefits from charcoal headlining and one of two charcoal-themed covers for the seats, either a Nappa leather and textile affair, or ventilated Nappa leather upholstery.
As for its equipment sheet, the Black Editions boast all of the nice-to-haves as the standard models, including items like a heads-up display, a 12-inch digital driver monitor, a 9-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless entry and start, a panoramic sunroof, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, depending on the trim level.
This is on top of assistance items such as cruise control, a rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Regarding the engine choices, the exclusive Volvo can be had in either mild-hybrid (MHEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) guises.
The MHEV, badged the B5, makes use of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol plant, which pumps out a total of 183kW and 350Nm.
This allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds while achieving an average fuel consumption of 7.6l/100km.
Alternatively, buyers can pick up the Recharge PHEV, which also runs on a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol drivetrain, but is helped out by a rear-mounted electric motor.
This gives the PHEV a considerable 340kW and 709Nm to work with, letting it race to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.
The e-motor is powered by an 18.8kWh battery, allowing the Volvo to travel on nothing but electricity for approximately 56km.
As a result, the hybrid has a manufacturer-claimed consumption figure as low as 1.6l/100km.
Regardless of the powerplant chosen, the XC60 features an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system.
