Two major South African airlines launching new international flights

Two airlines in South Africa are planning to launch two different international flights to popular destinations flying several times per week.

One of these is Airlink, which will introduce a new route between Cape Town and Botswana, while South African Airways (SAA) is expanding its service to Mauritius with additional flights to and from the tropical paradise.

Convenient flights

Starting with Airlink; it will open a new service between Cape Town International Airport and Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone, Botswana from 1 April 2025.

“As Botswana’s capital, Gaborone is an important regional destination for business,” said Rodger Foster, Airlink CEO and managing director.

“The city is home to thriving minerals, resources, automotive and tech sector companies and hosts the Southern African Development Community headquarters. It is also an important leisure tourism gateway to many game lodges and the Gaborone Game Reserve.”

The route will use Airlink’s Embraer E140 Regional Jets, which have a seating capacity of 44 passengers.

The service is scheduled to operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with outbound flights (designated 4Z 364) leaving Cape Town International at 10h50 to arrive in Gabarone at 13h00.

The return flights (4Z 365) will then leave at 13h45 to land at 16h00.

As for SAA, it is increasing the number of trips from South Africa to Mauritius in response to growing demand for flights to the popular holiday spot.

“Mauritius has long been a favoured holiday destination for South Africans, providing a tropical island holiday experience and is just four hours away from Johannesburg,” said SAA’s Interim Chief Commercial Officer, Tebogo Tsimane.

“Mauritius is also an important investment destination and financial services hub, with many major South African companies and brands expanding their operations on the island.”

The national airline relaunched its Mauritius service in 2021 shortly after emerging from business rescue.

It currently operates a single daily morning flight from O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius.

From December 2024, SAA will open an additional daily flight between the two destinations, giving travellers two different departure times.

The first plane (SA 190) departs Joburg at 09h40 to arrive at the island by 15h40, while the second flight (SA 192) takes off at 10h45 to land by 16h45.

As for the returning aircraft, the first carrier (SA 191) will depart Mauritius at 16h30 to land in Gauteng at 18h55, while the second (SA 193) leaves at 17h35 to arrive at 20h00.
