Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled a new special-edition version of the cult classic G-Class, and it’s coming to South Africa.
The G-Class, commonly referred to as the G-Wagen, is an ultra-exclusive 4×4 SUV that’s popular among the rich and famous who buy it as a status symbol.
While the base G-Wagen already commands a hefty price tag of R3,390,052, the special “Grand Edition” model is asking customers to part ways with an astounding R5,474,512.
The Grand Edition’s production is limited to just 1,000 units worldwide, and 20 of these have been allocated to South Africa for those lucky enough to be in a position to buy one.
What a R5.4-million Mercedes looks like
The Grand Edition’s contribution to the G-Class package starts with a Manufaktur Night Black Magno paint job accentuated with gold-coloured detailing.
AMG badges have been added to the exterior, including an Affalterbach emblem on the bonnet, and the iconic Mercedes star logo is finished in Kalaharigold Magno.
This Kalaharigold colour has also been applied to the inlays on the front and rear bumpers, the side foiling, the optical underride protection in the front, and the spare wheel ring and star inlay.
The SUV is perched atop sizeable 22-inch AMG forged alloy wheels with a cross-spoke appearance in tech gold, complemented by a matte-black central locking nut and a gold Mercedes star.
The German automaker has also included a customized AMG Indoor Car Cover with each purchase, which is made from a breathable outer layer of tear-resistant synthetic fibre fabric and an anti-static flannel inner fabric to protect the vehicle from dust and scratches in the garage.
Moving to the interior, the G-Wagen continues the colour theme with black and gold elements throughout the cabin.
AMG emblems can be found on the black door sill trims, which also have illuminated borders.
The seats are wrapped in G Manufaktur black Nappa leather with contrasting gold stitching, and the grab handles on the roof benefit from the same leather treatment.
Plaques with a gold AMG logo and gold edging are set into the backrests, and the floor mats feature the same black aesthetic with gold accents.
The trim piece of the inlay on the grab handle for the passenger side is finished in carbon with copper threading and bears a high-quality badge with the words “Grand Edition” on full display.
The appearance of carbon and copper thread can be seen in other elements of the cabin, too.
As for the AMG Performance steering wheel, they are wrapped in Dinamica microfibre and feature a wheel clasp with a G63 plaque.
Since the Grand Edition is based on the AMG G 63, it features a 4.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine putting out a respectable 430kW and 850Nm.
This is paired to the AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic gearbox, giving the Mercedes an average fuel consumption of 13.1l/100km.
It only takes 4.5 seconds for the large SUV to race from 0 to 100km/h, and it caps out at a top speed of 220km/h, which can be optionally raised to 240km/h.
The G-Wagen also features the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a ground clearance of 241mm, making it a capable off-roader.
Every Mercedes-Benz G-Class in South Africa, including the Grand Edition units, is sold with a 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.
