The battle for the best-selling car in South Africa was a narrow one in August, with the Toyota Hilux only just managing to beat the Ford Ranger at 2,527 sales versus 2,312.
This is the closest these arch-enemies have been to one another in quite some time, a possible hint that the Hilux’s age is starting to see it lose ground to more up-to-date rivals.
In third place was the recently-refreshed VW Polo Vivo which remained as popular as ever, securing a healthy 1,937 buyers.
Following the hatchback was another bakkie, the Isuzu D-Max, which pulled in 1,630 buyers, a mere four more than the Toyota Corolla Cross in fifth.
Moving onto the sixth position, this spot was occupied by the Hyundai Grand i10 which saw 1,328 units roll out of showroom doors.
A heated tussle transpired for seventh and eighth place, with the victor being declared the Suzuki Swift with 1,190 sales, narrowly beating out the Toyota Starlet Cross with 1,181.
The VW Polo came home in ninth position with 1,149 models moved, and the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro closed out the top 10 with 1,072 purchases – coincidentally also being the last vehicle to eclipe the 1,000-unit mark.
In 11th was the Nissan Magnite which sold 991 examples, trailed by the Haval Jolion with 953 transactions. The Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Starlet were next in line, scoring 892 and 842 customers, respectively.
The last bakkie on the list, the Mahindra Pik Up grabbed the 15th best-selling spot with 780 units sold.
The Toyota Fortuner and Kia Sonet were unlikely competitors for 16th place, though the adventure SUV proved more popular with 760 sales compared to the crossover’s 750.
The final three vehicles in the top 20 were the Suzuki Fronx with 724 registrations, the Toyota Urban Cruiser with 669, and the Renault Kiger with 620.
In total, the top performers accounted for 23,941 units, or 55%, of the aggregate 43,588 new vehicles sold across the market in August.
