New Ford Tourneo officially goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Ford has officially introduced the new Tourneo MPV to South Africa.

The eight-seater will initially only be available in a single Trend Long Wheelbase (LWB) specification, with more variants to be added at a later date, the automaker said.

Pricing for the new Tourneo is not finalised yet as the Blue Oval is still reviewing currency fluctuations. It provided an indicative starting price of R999,200.

“Once the rand settles against the dollar the company will confirm the price with an update,” Ford South Africa told TopAuto.

The popular people mover underwent a major upgrade for the newest generation now offering increased cabin space, higher levels of comfort and technology, and a more refined drivetrain.

A million-rand people mover

The new Tourneo sits on an all-new platform that ensures more room in the three-row cabin than in its predecessor and easier entry and exit courtesy of a lower floor height and a new integrated sidestep.

The van also boasts a reduced overall height of under two metres, which enables easier access to garages and multi-storey car parks that are often inaccessible to vehicles in the Tourneo segment, as well as contributing to optimised efficiency and refinement through improved aerodynamics.

Inside, the cabin now features a new flexible track-mounted seating system in the second and third rows that enables customers to slide seats forward or back along notched tracks, or to lift them out completely.

Additionally, the three second-row seats can each be moved independently, while the third-row seats have a two-seat/one-seat split.

The new chairs are also lighter than before and the second row now gets integrated seats, making the reconfiguration of the cabin far quicker and easier.

With the second and third-row seats removed, a massive 6.8m³ of loading volume is available, along with the ability to carry three standard Euro pallets.

Up front, a column-mounted shifter frees up more knee and leg space as well as making ingress and egress easier for the driver.

Further front cabin space and increased instrument panel storage are created by the roof-mounted front passenger airbag. This enables customers to keep laptop or A4 folder-sized items in the covered dashboard storage and means portable electronic devices can now be safely fitted closer to the driver with industry-standard AMPS mountings.

For new parents, Isofix child-seat anchors are fitted on all three seats in the second row as well as the two outboard seats in the third row.

Comfort is key in the new Tourneo, and to that end, it brings a host of amenities aimed at improving the user experience for both driver and passengers.

The MPV is delivered as standard with automatic dual-zone climate control with independent temperature adjustment for the rear seats, heated front seats, a 13-inch central touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless smartphone charger, and a new 12-inch instrument cluster that incorporates an 8-inch inch configurable digital display.

A range of ports is also included around the cabin, comprising one front dual USB (USB A and C) port, one front 12V socket, one rear 12V socket, and three rear USB ports.

It is further equipped with a 5G FordPass Connect modem, allowing owners to remotely lock or unlock the doors, remotely start the vehicle to cool or heat the cabin, and get vehicle-specific health alerts via the FordPass app.

The modem also facilitates wireless software updates that will improve the Tourneo’s features and capabilities over time without requiring a trip to the dealership.

Completing the package is a generous menu of safety and assistance systems comprising intelligent adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, evasive steering assist, forward-collision warning, reverse brake assist, driver alert with driver impairment monitor, adaptive front lighting system, ABS with dynamic stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution, emergency brake assist, a 180-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, trailer tow electrics, and six airbags.

Shielded power door deadlocks are also fitted along with a two-step door unlocking procedure as part of the keyless entry and push-button start system.

Propelling the Ford along the road is 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel mill good for 110kW and 360Nm, which uses a 20-litre AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid system to transform nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water, significantly reducing the impact of its exhaust emissions.

Power is channeled to the front axle via an eight-speed automatic gearbox resulting in an average fuel usage of 7.4l/100km, lending the MPV a maximum driving range of 946km on a single tank. A top speed of 180km/h is also achievable.

Furthermore, the powertrain can be optimised for the situation at hand with Eco and Tow/Haul drive modes and supports a maximum towing capacity of 2,500kg.

Ride comfort, handling, and refinement have been enhanced, too, thanks to an all-new independent rear suspension system that is standard across the range.
