New Mini Cooper in South Africa – Pricing revealed

The pricing for the new Mini Cooper has been uncovered ahead of its official launch in South Africa later this year.

According to our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, the new hatchback will be available in both three-door and five-door guises with prices starting at R602,051 and R624,051, respectively.

Engine

At launch, the roster will consist of the “C” and “S” specifications, which determine the Mini’s engine.

The C units are equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol plant, which produces a total of 115kW and 230Nm.

As a result, the hatchback can reach a top speed of 225km/h and race from 0 to 100km/h in 7.7 or 8.0 seconds, depending on whether you choose the three- or five-door model.

A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox is used to connect to the front wheels, leading to an average fuel consumption of 6.0l/100km.

Looking at the S variants, they benefit from a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged block that pumps out 150kW and 300Nm.

This puts the S in hot hatch territory similar to a Polo GTI, with a max speed of 242km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 to 6.8 seconds.

It uses the same gearbox, and has an economy figure of  6.3l/100km.

Features

The Cooper three-door measures 3,876mm in length, 1,970mm in width and 1,432mm in height.

In contrast, the five-door units are 160mm longer and 32mm taller, though the car’s width is unaffected.

The smaller models also have a boot with 210 litres that increases to 530 litres when the two rear seats are folded.

With the added points of entry, the Mini can take between 275 and 665 litres when the three rear seats are pushed down.

Standard equipment on the small car includes 16-inch alloy wheels, circular automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start, cloth and artificial leather upholstery, a heated multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a circular 9.4-inch OLED central display that pulls double-duty as the driver and infotainment systems.

The screen has a lower status bar for common functions like the onboard navigation, and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety and assistance items comprise front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring, ABS, electronic stability control, and six airbags.

The Cooper also has a list of optional extras such as larger 17 or 18-inch alloys, keyless entry, paddle shifters, a heads-up display, a panoramic sunroof,  full leather upholstery, electronically-adjustable front seats with heating, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
