More affordable Jaecoo SUV announced for South Africa

Jaecoo has taken the covers off the new J5, which is set to arrive in South Africa at some point throughout 2025.

The J5 will be the automaker’s second offering in our market following the debut of the J7 in April, with two other models, the J6 and J8, also being in the pipeline for a domestic debut.

Upon its arrival, the J5 will assume the roll of the new entry-level model in the Jaecoo family. Logic suggests it will therefore be the most attainable, too.

The J6 will be fully electric and the J8 will be the company’s flagship luxury SUV, so neither should be all that cheap.

It’s thus likely that the J5 will undercut the J7 by a noticeable margin, the latter of which currently retails from a starting price of R549,900.

“Introducing a more compact and competitively priced model will appeal to more consumers looking to join the Jaecoo family,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand & Marketing Manager Omoda & Jaecoo.

“Jaecoo will reveal additional J5 details related to performance and pricing closer to the on-sale date. Local specification for the J5 has yet to be finalised.”

The pet-friendly Jaecoo

The new J5 boasts a similar design language to its larger stablemate with a vertically slatted grille, slim rectangular LED headlights, and an abundance of right angles meant to emphasise its off-roading roots.

Up top sits a sizeable 1.45m² panoramic sunroof which Jaecoo claims is the biggest in its class, flanked by integrated roof rails that support a load of up to 75kg.

Further practicality comes in the form of camping lights, factory-installed hooks in the cargo area, and a charging port that can accommodate the necessary accessories one might take on outdoor excursions, as well as a maximum 1,250kg towing capacity.

Inside, the crossover sports a 13.2-inch central touchscreen with a variety of entertainment applications as well as smart navigation.

Another unique feature of the J5 is a focus on “human-pet travel.”

It provides a “healthy and comfortable experience for four-legged companions” through the fitment of crafted boarding steps and specially extended seats designed with pets in mind, in addition to a pet-feeding system.

It also takes into account passengers’ sensitivities to germs and hair associated with animals in the car, and thus gets an intelligent climate control system with a powerful filtration device that can isolate pet hair to maintain a fresh and clean air supply to the cabin.
