The pricing for the ultra high-end Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 and Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUVs has been revealed ahead of their official debut in South Africa.
According to our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, you’ll need to spend a minimum of R3,038,512 to get your hands on either of these elite SUVs.
Electric performance
As their EQ badges imply, the AMG and Maybach are both powered by a series of batteries and electric motors, with impressive results.
Starting with the EQE, it features a pair of permanently excited synchronous motors that link to the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
This is enough to give the Mercedes a staggering total output of 460kW and 950Nm, which translates to a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 240km/h.
All of this is powered by a 90.6kWh battery, which affords a driving range of up to 498km.
The battery can support either a 22kW AC charger or a 173kW DC fast-charging cable, which will achieve full charge in approximately five hours or 30 minutes, respectively.
Of course, the company’s performance wing has also tricked out the EQE with AMG Ride Control air suspension with an Adaptive Damping System and AMG Active Ride Control stabilization, which are tuned to provide a balance between comfort and handling out on a track.
It also comes with AMG high-performance brakes, which can be upgraded to AMG ceramic composite brakes.
As for the EQS, it has a similar setup with two e-motors but boasts an even higher power ceiling of 484kW and 955Nm.
It’s not quite as fast as the track-themed AMG, but the Maybach can still reach 100km/h in a rapid 4.4 seconds despite all of its luxury fittings.
It also has a top speed of 210km/h, and a maximum range of 600km thanks to a 125kWh battery.
This cell supports both a 22kW AC plug that will recharge in six and a half hours and a 200kW DC socket that can reach 100% in 30 minutes.
The luxurious model also uses the 4Matic AWD system and Airmatic air suspension with continuously adjustable damping for maximum comfort.
Another perk of both SUVs is that they feature rear-axle steering, which can reduce the turning circle for better maneuverability in tight spaces.
Equipment
Naturally, the AMG and Maybach have an extensive spec sheet reflecting their sporty and luxurious themes.
Both SUVs are equipped with the MBUX multimedia system, which powers a digital driver display, a large infotainment screen, and an optional passenger-side monitor.
By default, the EQE is fitted with Sports seats with black microfibre upholstery and red contrast stitching, but this can be swapped out for Nappa leather on request.
The EQS takes things a step further with Nappa leather seats in Espresso Brown/Balao Brown Pearl and two 11.6-inch screens for the rear passengers.
Other features across both electric cars include heated and ventilated seats with electronic adjustment, multi-zone automatic climate control, and 21-inch alloy wheels.
The Maybach also comes with a 15-speaker Burmester stereo and a fragrance system, while the AMG has a flat-bottom sports steering wheel and an AMG Sound Experience function that mimics the sounds you’d expect from a combustion engine.
