Seeing the tactics Chery and GWM employed to gain the trust of consumers, one of South Africa’s newest Chinese automakers has ventured to one-up its competition.
GAC Motor, which opened its doors on local soil in August 2024, this week launched lifetime engine warranties for its GS3 Emzoom and Emkoo SUVs.
This gives the GAC SUVs the longest engine warranties of any car on the South African market.
Previously, Chery held this accolade with its 10-year/1-million kilometre guarantees, and it was joined by GWM which now also offers a 10-year agreement on certain products.
“In a historic move, GAC Motor South Africa proudly introduces a lifetime engine warranty across its entire vehicle lineup,” the company announced on 5 November.
“Yes, you heard it right! Every customer who purchased a GAC Motor vehicle in 2024 and onward will be honoured with this incredible offer.”
However, the lifetime engine warranty is only valid for the vehicle’s first owner, therefore, it will not be enjoyed by those who purchase pre-owned and is unlikely to bolster resale values.
Ts and Cs apply
To keep the new lifetime engine warranty intact, vehicle service and repairs must be conducted at GAC-authorised service centres and only with approved parts.
“This is standard practice in the industry, ensuring you get nothing but the best of the brand quality,” said the automaker.
For existing owners to take advantage of the after-sales agreement, they also require a traceable service history recorded within the authorized GAC Motor service centres.
At present, GAC only offers two vehicles in South Africa in the form of the GS3 Emzoom starting at R469,900, as well as the larger Emkoo with an asking price of R599,900.
It plans to expand its line-up with the all-electric Aion Y come 2025 with a variety of other models earmarked for domestic roads thereafter.
“With a robust network of franchised sales and service dealers already established across the country, GAC Motor has ambitious plans to expand this network over the next three years, ensuring comprehensive coverage in every major town and city,” the company said.
