6×4 Ford Ranger now available in South Africa – Pricing and specifications

Ulterio Motiv has launched its second product in South Africa, a six-wheeled Ford Ranger bakkie aimed at tackling extreme terrains while carrying massive payloads.
Ulterio Motiv is the newly launched sister company of vehicle armouring firm SVI Engineering, unveiling its first offering – a 6×6 Toyota Land Cruiser – just a few months ago.
The new Ranger is available in 6×4 flavour only, with prices for the conversion starting at R265,000 excl. VAT.
The cost excludes the base price of the bakkie which can be a single-, extended- or double-cab model, as well as any additional optional extras.
Approximate build time for the vehicle is set at six weeks.
Capability to the extreme
The 6×4 Ranger has been designed, developed, and homologated to carry an increased payload capacity of 2,000kg over harsh terrains, leading to a maximum gross vehicle mass of 4,500kg, depending on the model.
This also means drivers must possess a C1 licence to legally operate the behemoth on public roads.
To build the machine, Ulterio Motiv extends the Ranger’s standard chassis to install a third non-driven axle behind the rear wheels. This load-carrying axle does not impact the standard Ford drivetrain meaning the 4×4 system and differential lock remain fully functional.
The new rear suspension setup works on the principle of a bogie system that results in the third axle carrying around 40% of the rear mass with the middle axle shouldering the rest.
“This provides the driven axle with more grip because of the higher contact force between the driven wheels and the road surface improving traction,” said Ulterio Motiv.
Additionally, an upgraded braking system is installed that adds a disc-brake setup to the third axle, which also benefits from the standard Ford ABS system.
Following the conversion, Ulterio Motiv can manufacture a custom drop-side load bin that measures 1.6m wide and 2.5m long.
Buyers can also customise the “blank canvas” chassis with a bespoke loading bin, closed canopy, or any other design they’d like whether for camping or, for example, emergency services.
Importantly, all the comfort, luxury, and safety systems from the original Ranger remain once the conversion has been completed.
