Toyota cars recalled in South Africa – Details

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has notified motorists of several new recalls and Special Service Campaigns affecting Toyota and Hino vehicles in South Africa.

The recalls concern the Toyota Corolla Hatchback and Sedan Hybrids, and the Hino 200b Series 310.

The NCC urges consumers in possession of these products to contact the suppliers or point of purchase for either a replacement, repair, or refund.

TopAuto reached out to Toyota South Africa to get more details on these recalls, which it said it will only be able to provide at a later stage.

It did, however, confirm that there is no recall of the Land Cruiser 300 as stated in the NCC notice.

“There is no Recall/Special Service Campaign for the brake actuator with a skid-control ECU [for the Land Cruiser 300],” said a spokesperson for the company.

“Toyota South Africa Motors has been consistently proactive when it comes to handling recalls, and we’ve always reached out to customers. We are an organisation that values its customers,” the spokesperson added.

Corolla Sedan

According to the NCC, the steering system of the Toyota Corolla Sedan 1.8 HEV XS and XR consists of a steering intermediate shaft assembly that connects the steering wheel to the steering rack.

There is a possibility that the upper universal joint on the steering intermediate shaft assembly was manufactured with cracks at the supplier.

“Eventually the universal joint can break, causing a loss of steering and increasing the risk of an accident,” said the NCC notice.

The commission did not disclose how many units of the vehicle are affected by the recall nor when they were built.

The model codes include 66H, 66L, 66M, and 66N.

Corolla Hatchback

The Corolla Cross Hatchback 1.8 HEV XS and XR are equipped with a brake actuator with a skid-control Electronic Control Unit (ECU) which governs the hydraulic and regenerative brake systems.

Due to the programming of the skid control ECU software, there is a possibility that the brake fluid pressure may not be controlled as designed in limited situations when the brake pedal is applied during cornering.

Operators may therefore temporarily experience a hard brake pedal with reduced braking force, increasing the brake stopping distance more than expected, and potentially increasing the risk of a crash, said the NCC.

The affected models were built between 7 October 2022 and 2 January 2024.

The model codes include 49U, 49X, 49Y, 66H, 66M, and 66N.

Hino 200b Series 310

The recall notice explains that the steering pinch bolts of the Hino 200b Series 310 may have been over-torqued during the assembly process.

In time, these bolts could fracture and break off, causing a loss of steering control.

The affected models were built between 2 June 2022 and 11 November 2022.

The model codes include FH2.
