MG officially opens doors in South Africa – What’s available

MG has finally returned to South Africa, bringing with it three new cars ranging in price from entry-level to high-end.

The Chinese automaker is officially launching today, 21 January 2025, with a portfolio encompassing the ZS crossover, HS SUV, and Cyberster roadster, which will soon appear in 25 showrooms around the country.

A model for every occasion

The most affordable option in the new MG family is the ZS – a starter crossover that retails for less than R300,000 – putting it in competition with the popular Suzuki Fronx and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.

It is available in two trim levels at launch namely the Comfort and Luxury, both of which feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 84kW and 150Nm.

This is sent down to the front wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox, leading to an average fuel consumption of 7.1l/100km.

The base Comfort furthermore offers remote central locking, all-electric windows, heated electronic side mirrors, roof rails, a multifunction steering wheel, manual aircon, cloth seats, four speakers, Bluetooth, cruise control, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill-start assist, and six airbags.

Anyone who springs for the Luxury can also expect leatherette upholstery, six speakers, a reverse camera, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Next up is the HS, a midsize SUV with its sights set on entries like the VW Tiguan, Ford Territory, and Kia Sportage.

It follows the same Comfort and Luxury grades as the ZS but is sold with two different engines for a total of four models.

The engines in question start with a 1.5-litre turbo mill with 125kW and 275Nm, which connects to a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and averages 6.9l/100km.

Alternatively, there’s a 2.0-litre turbo plant with 170kW and 370Nm paired to a nine-speed DCT, which naturally has a higher consumption stat of 7.3l/100km.

The HS comes standard with rain-sensing wipers, an electronic parking brake, rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry, perforated leatherette upholstery, six speakers, automatic aircon, a 12.3-inch dual display with smartphone pairing, and seven airbags.

Additionally, the MG has an advanced driver assistance suite with electronic stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, corner brake control, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, hill control, tyre-pressure monitoring, front and rear collision warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

The top models will then throw in electronically-adjustable and heated front seats, eight speakers, front parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, a wireless charger, and a panoramic sunroof.

The final model appearing in showrooms this month is the Cyberster, an all-electric two-door convertible sports car.

It is available in a single specification with all-wheel drive and a 77kWh battery, which affords a driving range of 443km.

Power is sourced from two motors mounted over each axle, with the front unit generating 375kW while the back adds another 250kW.

In practice, this allows the MG to sprint to 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds before capping out at a max speed of 208km/h.

Charging the battery can be done with either a 7kW AC port or a 144kW DC fast cable.

Unsurprisingly, the convertible has a rather fancy spec sheet, with a soft-top roof that can open and close in 15 seconds, 20-inch machined alloy wheels, leather seats, and a flat-bottom Sports steering wheel.
