Best-selling cars in South Africa

The Suzuki Swift came out on top as the most sought-after new car in South Africa in January 2025, surpassing the usual holder of this position, the Toyota Hilux, by just 71 sales.

The Swift managed to move an impressive 2,628 units over the 31 days, while the Hilux saw a still commendable 2,557 registrations.

In third place was the evergreen VW Polo Vivo which sold 2,549 examples, trailed by the Toyota Starlet with 2,180 sales.

The Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max were up next with the former gaining 1,858 buyers and the latter 1,413.

Seventh once again went to Toyota for the 1,226 sales of the Corolla Cross.

The Hyundai Grand i10 grabbed eighth with 1,212 purchases, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro ninth with 1,122, and the Haval Jolion 10th with 1,099.

Toyota was responsible for both the 11th and 12th spots with the Starlet Cross taking the preferred position owing to its 1,050 sales with the Urban Cruiser in tow with 890 sales.

Had it not been for the Kia Sonet, Toyota could’ve gotten three spots in a row. The Sonet climbed to 13th courtesy of its 830 registrations, a mere five more than the Toyota Vitz in 14th.

The last bakkie on the list, the Mahindra Pik Up secured 15th after catching the eye of 801 consumers.

The final five were made up of the Suzuki Fronx, VW Polo, Nissan Magnite, Toyota Fortuner, and Suzuki Ertiga, in that order.

These autos saw 771, 754, 744, 652, and 637 purchases, respectively.

Overall, the top 20 best-selling cars in South Africa totaled 25,798 sales, or approximately 56% of the 46,398 new vehicles sold in the country.
