New VW Tayron for South Africa – Specifications revealed

VW has revealed the specifications for the upcoming Tayron – the brand’s latest seven-seater SUV.

The Tayron will go on sale in South Africa in the second half of 2025 with two derivatives – the Life and the R-line.

What to expect

The Tayron is replacing the Tiguan Allspace as the brand’s new midsize seven-seater SUV, and is positioned between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg.

Upon its arrival in South Africa, customers will be able to choose between the base Life model and the range-topping R-line.

Standard equipment on the Life will include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, illuminated VW logos at the front and rear, three-zone automatic air conditioning, 10-colour ambient lighting, nine airbags, a digital driver display, and a 12.6-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto.

It also comes with a Driver Experience Control module for selecting various driving modes, including Normal, Eco, Comfort, Sport, Off-road, and Individual.

On top of this, the Life offers a driver-aid suite with adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, a reverse camera with a parking assistant, and a passenger exit system warning when it’s not safe to open the doors.

Those who upgrade to the R-line can then expect details such as 19-inch alloys, dynamic LED headlights with cornering technology, unique bumpers, 3D LED taillight clusters, Varenna leather Sport comfort seats with integrated headrests, leather interior finishes, and 30-colour ambient lighting.

Optional extras on the Tayron, meanwhile, include IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights with interactive lighting functions, a large sliding panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a high-quality leather package with electrically adjustable ergoActive Plus seats and massage and ventilation functions.

VW stated that it will only announce the engine selection closer to the car’s debut, but overseas, the SUV is available with a variety of powertrains including mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, turbo-petrol (TSI) and turbo-diesel (TDI) units.

The hybrids are unlikely to be included, considering that the company did not include a semi-electric drivetrain when it launched the next-gen Tiguan last year, but the TSI and TDI options should be a safe bet.

Assuming the Tayron shares the same selection as the Tiguan, customers can look forward 1.4-litre TSI with 110kW and 250Nm, a 2.0-litre TDI with 110kW and 340Nm, and a 2.0-litre TSI with 140kW and 350Nm.

Pricing will only be revealed at a later date, but expect the seven-seater to be more expensive than the Tiguan SUV it’s based on.

As a reminder, the Tiguan Life and R-Line currently retail for a minimum of R716,900 and R781,600, respectively, so the Tayron should be somewhere north of these figures.
