Rugged new Volvo for South Africa – Details

Volvo has taken the wraps off the new EX30 Cross Country (CC).

Sporting higher ground clearance, burlier styling, and various off-road-focused accoutrements, the EX30 CC is a more rugged variant of the existing EX30 battery-electric crossover.

The good news: South African customers will be able to get their hands on the new crossover. The bad news: we don’t know when.

TopAuto dropped the local arm of Volvo a line to ask about the expected launch date and pricing of the EX30 CC for the domestic market, however, the company said it unfortunately couldn’t provide this info right now.

“Volvo Car South Africa will share further details of the Volvo EX30 CC closer to the launch date” is all the spokesperson was willing to say.

That said, the first global markets are getting the electric car before the end of the year, and, given the popularity of the EX30 in South Africa, we should be high up on the priority list.

EX30 Cross Country specs

The EX30 CC is immediately distinguishable from its standard namesake courtesy of a unique exterior design.

A tougher look comes from a darkened front shield that features artwork showing the topography of the Kebnekaise mountain range in Arctic Sweden, as well as a darkened boot lid.

Chunky front and rear skidplates, along with wheel-arch extensions and bigger tyres, then complete the CC package.

To further bring the Cross Country concept to life, Volvo is launching a so-called Cross Country Experience to “create concrete, tangible benefits that will help you to embrace your inner explorer even more.”

Essentially, the Experience gives owners access to an array of bespoke accessories which includes a load carrier, a roof basket, 18-inch all-terrain tyres, and mudflaps.

More add-ons will be announced “in due course,” the brand said.

Inside, the Swedish manufacturer included a few choice innovations that make the cabin more functional in the great outdoors.

For instance, the already sizeable door bins have been enlarged through the removal of the speakers – which are now incorporated into the soundbar on the dashboard.

Like other EX30s, it also provides a big storage compartment on the floor between driver and front passenger, as well as slide-out cupholders.

Rear passengers get a removable and washable storage box that slides out from beneath the central tunnel, and, in the boot, Volvo has etched a handy “Will it fit?” guide that indicates how much of your gear you can fit in.

The EX30 CC is delivered with built-in Google services meaning passengers can interact with a variety of Google products such as Google Maps directly through the central infotainment display.

Cabin pre-conditioning is available, too, enabling the owner to set the climate control to a predetermined temperature before they get in.

It also ships with Volvo’s renowned safety systems, including braking and steering support and a driver drowsiness monitor.

Volvo didn’t specify which drivetrain the EX30 CC will come with, though it did reveal it will offer all-wheel drive and a range of up to 427km.

This suggests it should feature the twin-motor setup that’s good for an impressive 315kW and 543Nm, which rockets the standard EX30 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

The 69kWh battery pack can then be replenished from 10-80% in as little as 26 minutes.

More information on the Volvo EX30 CC, such as its South African pricing and line-up, should be revealed closer to its launch date.
