New Ford Transit Custom Sport launched in South Africa – Pricing

Ford has officially launched the Transit Custom Sport in South Africa, adding a dynamic new option to its fleet of commercial vehicles.

The Custom Sport has a manufacturer recommended starting price of R938,000, which includes a 4-year/120,000km warranty, an optional 6-year/90,000km service plan, and a 4-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance plan.

Specifications

The Sport differentiates itself from other vans thanks to its unique appearance, which starts with an athletic body kit.

It has a unique honeycomb sport grille, as well as a rear spoiler and 17-inch matte black alloy rims fitted with 215/60 R17 tyres.

The look of the vehicle is further accentuated by a pair of racing stripes that extend from the front bumper over the bonnet, along the roof, and back down to the rear twin barn doors.

The lighting signature is up to par, too, as the Transit is equipped with LED headlights with high-beam control, as well as LED daytime running lights and taillamps.

A similar overhaul has been given to the interior, where you’ll find a pair of seats decked out with vertical blue stripes, and a blue stitching pattern.

The driver’s seat has six-way electronic adjustment with lumbar support, while the passenger has four-way manual adjustment.

Furthermore, both seats have dual armrests, and heating functionality for cold mornings.

Other interior details include a piano-black centre console, USB-A and USB-C ports, a 12V socket, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 13-inch Ford Sync 4 infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The passenger airbag is now mounted in the roof, which has freed up enough space in the dashboard for a glove compartment that can take a laptop or an A4-sized file.

The steering wheel even has a unique feature where it can be tilted to form a stand for a laptop or table when not in use, though this is an optional extra that will become available in the second quarter of 2025.

Buyers can also install an optional metal bulkhead with soft-touch materials, which divides the cabin from the storage area.

As for the van’s main selling feature, the new Custom has a lower floor height for easier loading, and the vehicle itself is less than two metres tall so it can pass through enclosed spaces with ease.

The Sport is exclusively available in a short-wheelbase format, meaning it measures 5,050mm long with a load compartment that is 2,602mm long.

It is also 1,392mm wide between the wheel arches, which means the Ford can accommodate up to three standard Euro pallets.

In practical terms, the load area has a volume of 5.8m3 and can support a payload of up to 1,023kg.

If more storage is still needed, the Transit can also tow a trailer weighing up to 2,500kg.

Powering the Sport is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine producing 125kW and 390Nm – 25kW and 30Nm more than the base Custom.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox sends this power down to the front wheels, and drivers can use the gearshift to make manual selections should they desire.

The Transit also has five selectable driving modes for Normal, Eco, Slippery, and Tow/Haul, as well as an exclusive Sport mode.

Additionally, the 55-litre tank has an auxillary 20-litre tank for Adblue diesel exhaust fluid, which transforms nitrogen oxide into nitrogen and water to drastically cut down on the vehicle’s harmful emissions.

On top of all of this, the Custom is sold with a suite of assistance features, including ABS, electronic stability control, traction control, hill assist, emergency brake assist, reverse brake assist, evasive steering assist, pre-collision assist with autonomous emergency braking, and collision mitigation.

It also has adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, a driver impairment monitor, lane-keep assist, roll over mitigation, speed assist with traffic sign recognition, tyre-pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a 180-degree camera, and six airbags.

Keyless entry and start is included as standard, and owners can use the FordPass app to remotely lock, unlock, and start the engine of the vehicle, as well as check its location and health status.
