Joburg takes next step to becoming Smart City

The Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC), a municipal entity charged with the governance of the City of Johannesburg’s broadband and communications infrastructure, has launched a new initiative to provide free Wi-Fi access across all Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations.

The phased rollout will offer high-speed internet connectivity to thousands of daily commuters, enabling them to maximise their time while waiting for buses.

The project marks the next step in Joburg’s ongoing plan to becoming a Smart City.

As part of this endeavour, it previously also introduced an Africa-first Intelligent Transport System that facilitates automated fare collection, real-time monitoring, and in-vehicle Wi-Fi on its Metrobus service.

Driving digital transformation

The new BRT station Wi-Fi is touted to have several benefits, including boosting productivity and entertainment for travellers, prociding educational support, and improveing social connectivity and civic engagement.

“Commuters can access emails, work remotely, or attend virtual meetings, effectively extending their workday,” said Neani Mulaudzi, MTC’s General Manager of Network Operations.

“Passengers can also stream music, watch videos, or browse social media while waiting to board a bus.”

Mulaudzi further highlights that students can leverage the free Wi-Fi for online learning, research, and accessing academic resources; and that travellers can remain in touch with family and friends.

Mulaudzi says the project is a testament to the City’s goal of improving the quality of life for residents.

“By offering free Wi-Fi at BRT stations, we are not only enhancing the commuting experience but also driving digital transformation across the City,” he said.

MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene highlighted that Internet data remains a premium commodity in South Africa, resulting in many of the City’s residents being unable to stay connected and access vital online services.

“This intervention aims to assist residents with Internet access for communication, research, and other crucial services,” he said.

“Wi-Fi for all passengers will enable them to continue and complete their work before reaching home, giving them more quality time with their families and loved ones.”

The initiative also aligns with Joburg’s broader digital and economic development strategies, which aim to position the City as a leader in urban connectivity.

“It is an overall smart system aimed at improving the quality of experience for our valuable and hardworking commuters. By integrating free Wi-Fi into public transport infrastructure, MTC is not only improving accessibility but also encouraging economic participation and social inclusion,” said Mulaudzi.

The BRT Wi-Fi rollout will be completed in phases, with the MTC to closely monitor usage and provide regular updates on its progress. A formal launch event will be held upon full implementation.
