VW has officially launched the new Crafter in South Africa, adding another model to the brand’s light commercial toolbox.
The Crafter is available in four specifications with prices starting at R991,000.
Specifications
The Crafter is currently limited to an extra-long wheelbase platform (4,490mm in length) and is rear-wheel drive with a choice of either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Regardless of the model chosen, the Volkswagen is powered by a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel (BiTDI) engine with an output of 120kW and 340Nm.
The panel van is also offered with either a standard high roof or a “super high roof,” the latter of which is 2,096mm tall and means the panel van’s cargo area can accommodate a total volume of up to 17.5 cubic metres.

Regarding its equipment sheet, the Crafter has been given an overhaul similar to its smaller sibling, the Transporter.
The commercial vehicle now boasts a 10.3-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, a radio, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, allowing operators to use applications such as Google Maps.
It also has a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless phone charger, automatic air conditioning, a multifunction steering wheel, an electronic hand brake, keyless start, hill assist, and front and rear parking sensors.
It’s worth noting that, earlier this year, VW stated that it would launch the Crafter with a variety of different wheelbases, the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, and a selection of TDI engines.
Unfortunately, however, the company has not provided a timeline for the release of these other models.
