Official petrol price decreases for March announced

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has published the official fuel price decreases that will take effect tomorrow, 5 March 2025.

Petrol will drop by 7c per litre across the board while diesel is going down by a maximum of 24c per litre, depending on the grade.

The reductions bring an end to four consecutive months of petrol price increases, which started in November 2024.

Rand to the rescue

During the period under review, 31 January to 27 February, the average international product prices for petrol increased, whilst those for diesel decreased as a result of inconsistent demand and fluctuating oil prices.

These developments saw 7c per litre tacked on to the prices of petrol for March, whereas diesel prices were slashed by anywhere from 3c to 8c per litre.

Meanwhile, the rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review, when compared to the previous month.

The average rand/US dollar exchange rate between 31 January and 27 February 2025 was R18.5047/dollar compared to R18.7343/dollar during the previous period.

This led to a lower contribution to the basic fuel prices on petrol and diesel of 13.54c per litre and 14.38c per litre, respectively.

In line with the provisions of the self-adjusting Slate Levy mechanism, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00c/l with effect from 05 March 2025.

With these inputs accounted for, this is how much the price of fuel will drop this March:

  • Petrol 93 – Decrease of 7c a litre
  • Petrol 95 – Decrease of 7c a litre
  • Diesel 0.05% – Decrease of 18c a litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – Decrease of 24c a litre
