Toyota Vitz updated for South Africa – Lower price and extra features

Toyota has quietly updated the Vitz for South Africa, slashing its price tag in the process.

Our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists highlighted that the Japanese automaker recently adjusted the price of its entry-level car, lowering it to the point that it is now the cheapest car in the country.

The Vitz is available in three specifications, and prices start at R178,800.

New price

Admittedly, this is not the first time that the Vitz has claimed the title of South Africa’s most affordable car, as the company previously offered a promotional rebate of R20,000 that reduced the hatchback’s original sticker of R189,900 down to R169,900.

That promotion is no longer available, but Toyota has now adjusted the base price of the Vitz, reducing the upfront cost of the model by up to R15,000.

The following table shows the reductions for each model in the updated Vitz family:

ModelOriginal priceNew priceDifference
Toyota Vitz 1.0R189,900R178,800– R11,100
Toyota Vitz 1.0 XRR219,900R209,900– R10,000
Toyota Vitz 1.0 XR AutoR239,900R224,900– R15,000

It’s worth noting that the Vitz X-Cite variants, which were introduced in late 2023 and featured a number of cosmetic details over their standard counterparts, appear to have been dropped from the roster.

The end result of these changes is that the Vitz is officially South Africa’s cheapest set of wheels, undercutting the Suzuki S-Presso’s R178,900 sticker by just R100.

Another interesting fact is that the Vitz now costs significantly than the Suzuki Celerio that it is based on, as the latter currently retails for between R188,900 and R225,900.

New features

The price isn’t the only thing that’s changed, as the Toyota has been given a couple of new features.

Notably, all three versions now come with six airbags instead of two, as the company has added new side and curtain airbags to complement the existing dual front ones.

The top-spec XR has also been given a new reverse camera.

Beyond this, the equipment sheet is the same as before, as the entry-grade hatchback is fitted with 14-inch steel wheels, a full-sized spare wheel, halogen headlights, a 295-litre boot, ABS, two front airbags, a multifunction steering wheel, rear park distance control, fabric upholstery, manual air conditioning, and two speakers.

The XR adds 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, electric side mirrors, remote central locking, electric windows, a USB port, two more speakers for a total of four, and a 7-inch infotainment screen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Each purchase includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 4-service/60,000km service plan.
