New VW Golf officially launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

VW has launched the Golf TSI in South Africa, adding a relatively affordable option to the iconic hatchback series.

The current-gen Golf has thus far been limited to its hot hatch GTI and R forms in our market, which ask for a minimum of R853,400 and R1,016,600, respectively.

In contrast, the TSI has a starting price of R580,900, meaning the barrier to entry has been lowered by a substantial R272,500.

Engine

The TSI roster is split across four trim levels, all of which feature a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

This engine produces a total of 110kW and 250Nm, which allows for a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km.

Features

Kicking off the Golf line-up is the base Life specification, which comes standard with Eco-LED headlights, 16-inch Norfolk alloy wheels, a multifunction steering wheel, a six-speaker stereo, cruise control, air conditioning, 10-colour ambient lighting, a 10-inch digital driver display, and a 10.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

One step up from this is the Life Plus, which adds selectable driver profiles, a rearview camera, 30-colour ambient lighting, and Art-velour Sports comfort seats.

Next up is the R-Line, which gains a number of racing-themed cosmetics and extra features such as model-specific bumpers and headlights, 17-inch Coventry alloy wheels, keyless entry, a heated Sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, progressive steering and sports suspension, three-zone climate control with rear vents and an allergen filter, and park distance control with a parking assistant.

On top of all of this, the flagship R-Line Plus is fitted with IQ.Light Matrix LED headlights, 18-inch Leeds alloy rims, an illuminated front logo, an electronically adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, Vienna leather upholstery with R logos, and stainless steel pedals.

Pricing

The South African pricing for the updated VW Golf series is as follows:

This includes a 3-year/120,000km warranty and a 5-year/90,000km service plan.
