We’re not leaving South Africa – Proton

Proton has reaffirmed its commitment to the South African market following reports that it could be leaving the country again.

In Combined Motor Holdings’ (CMH) latest integrated annual report, CEO Jebb McIntosh said that Proton’s import and distribution operation has “continued to be challenging and costly” since the manufacturer re-entered the country in September 2022.

“Current inventory will be sold during the first half of the coming [financial] year, and thereafter the Group and the Malaysian manufacturer will decide on the way forward,” he said.

CMH is the sole and official importer and distributor of Proton vehicles in South Africa.

These comments thus fueled speculation that the manufacturer is on shaky ground and that it may not see the end of the year.

It would mark the second time that Proton exits the South African market.

Proton is here to stay

Following the comments made by CMH’s McIntosh, Proton released an official statement reaffirming its long-term commitment to the local market.

“Despite recent media speculation, Proton is not exiting the South African market,” said the company.

“The reference made by CMH CEO Jebb McIntosh during the results presentation was strictly in relation to stock liquidation of ageing inventory in a very difficult and competitive market.”

This, it said, is a standard industry practice to prepare for the arrival of exciting new models.

Proton said it will be strengthening its market presence by launching new-generation vehicles in the near future.

This will include compact sedans, hatchbacks, and competitive B-segment SUVs with internal combustion and hybrid powertrains.

At present, Proton offers the Saga sedan in addition to the X50X70, and X90 line of SUVs, which sold a combined total of 160 units in the first three months of 2025.

The manufacturer operates out of 10 dealer locations nationwide situated in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
