More fuel-efficient Omoda C5 for South Africa – Photos

Omoda has plans to launch a new model for the C5 that will drastically cut down on its fuel consumption.

Unsurprisingly, this new iteration of the popular crossover will take the form of a hybrid vehicle, utilizing the latest technology from the Chery Automotive Group.

This will be the first electrified model in the C5 roster, which was a title that was previously set to go towards the all-electric E5.

The E5 is a battery-electric version of the Omoda that was previously set to launch in South Africa this year.

However, after conducting extensive market research, the automaker ultimately decided that it would not be feasible to launch the E5 in our market.

One reason for this decision is that Omoda’s parent company, Chery, has officially decided to launch iCar in South Africa, which is a sub-brand exclusively focused on electric vehicles (EVs).

Consequently, the first all-electric models from the Chery family to appear in South Africa will now come from iCar, rather than Omoda or its 4×4 counterpart – Jaecoo.

However, while EVs may be the domain of iCar; Chery, Omoda, and Jaecoo are all working on hybrid models that make use of the company’s latest third-generation technology.

Super Hybrid System

Going forward, many of the Omoda and Jaecoo models that feature hybrid technology will feature an “SHS” badge, which stands for “Super Hybrid System.”

The same tech will also be found on Chery cars, though the company will use a different moniker called “CHS,” or “Chery Hybrid System.”

In addition to the new badge, the C5 SHS has a unique appearance with a closed-off front end, meaning it doesn’t have the distinctive diamond-pattern grille seen on the pure ICE (internal combustion engine) models.

Unfortunately, Omoda has not yet confirmed the powertrain details for the C5 SHS, but there’s a good chance that it will receive the same setup as the upcoming Jaecoo J7 SHS.

This model features a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which is paired to a front-mounted electric motor.

The result is a rather potent combined output of 255kW and 525Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds.

Importantly, the SHS units are plug-in hybrids, which means the new models come with an 18.3kWh battery.

On the J7, this pack is large enough to allow for roughly 90km of electric driving, drastically cutting down on the amount of time spent burning petrol.

As far as the C5’s equipment is concerned, it should come with all of the same kit we’ve come to expect from the units already on sale in South Africa.

This includes keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, ambient cabin lighting, six speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and two 10.25-inch screens for the driver and infotainment systems.
