Best-selling cars in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux was the best-selling vehicle in South Africa in May 2025, moving a grand total of 2,548 units.

This was closely followed by its bakkie rival – the Ford Ranger – which knocked the Suzuki Swift out of second place with 2,147 units.

Of course, the Swift still did incredibly well, landing in third with 1,842 sales.

Fourth place, meanwhile, went to the Toyota Corolla Cross with 1,629 purchases, while fifth place was taken by the VW Polo Vivo with 1,543 units.

Another top-seller in May was the Hyundai Grand i10, which placed sixth overall thanks to 1,537 buyers.

The Isuzu D-Max moved up two spots to take seventh with 1,473 sales, and the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro was the best-selling Chinese car last month with 1,255 buyers.

The Suzuki Fronx’ 1,219 sales landed it in ninth, and the Haval Jolion closed out the top 10 with 1,113 units.

After this came the Toyota Starlet with 1,039 units, followed by the Kia Sonet, Mahindra Pik Up, VW Polo, and Suzuki Ertiga with 870, 786, 767, and 721 sales, respectively.

The Starlet Cross came 16th with 694 units, putting it just ahead of the VW T-Cross and its 686 customers.

The Toyota Fortuner moved 679 units, and the final two spots in the top 20 went to the Toyota Vitz and Rumion with 624 and 618 purchases.

Overall, the top 20 best-selling vehicles accounted for a combined 29,355 units, representing 64.79% of the 45,308 new registrations for May 2025.
