Jaecoo has announced that the upcoming J5 will be released in the third quarter of 2025.
The newest model from the Chinese automaker, the J5 is a compact crossover positioned as a more affordable alternative to the J7 already on sale in South Africa.
“The JAECOO J5 represents the next chapter for our brand in South Africa,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa.
“It brings the same premium quality and design sophistication that our customers expect, now in a more compact and attainable package.”
Thanks to this, when the J5 does release, it will likely be among the most well-equipped vehicles in its market segment.
What to expect

While the J5 will serve as the entry-level SUV for the brand in South Africa, this hasn’t detracted from its features or technical performance.
It boasts a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 115kW and 230Nm of torque, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that drives the front wheels.
The CVT is intended to provide a more seamless driving experience, something which is complemented by the addition of three driving modes for Normal, Eco, and Sport.
The J5 will also eventually be offered with plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and all-wheel-drive derivatives; however, further details on these models have not yet been released.
In terms of features, buyers can look forward to a well-rounded spec sheet with a large portrait 13.2-inch infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, and a panoramic sunroof.
It also comes with a wireless phone charger, voice commands, and smartphone connectivity.
Depending on the trim level, the SUV will include options such as leather upholstery, ventilated seating, automatic climate control, and ambient lighting.
This is in addition to various safety fittings, including collision avoidance technology, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot detection.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also be happy to know that the J5 is fitted with underbody protection and that the SUV is rated to tow trailers.
Further details on the J5 will be released closer to the launch date, including its full spec sheet, model selection, and pricing.
Also worth noting is that the J5 will be the second new Jaecoo to arrive in South Africa this year, following the launch of the new J7 SHS later this month.
After the J5, the automaker also plans to launch the flagship J8 SUV, though it’s currently unknown when this model will make its debut.
